40 years of 91X

That's the frustrating thing. The War On Drugs, Broken Bells, etc have always gotten some love on 91x in the 10s and last year, but never get any replays outside of the top 91s. The new music feels more like an afterthought now. :(

Does anyone in San Diego remember indie 103.1 in Los angeles in the 00's? It was a great station with Steve Jones and jonesey jukebox and great specialty shows? Great little indie rock station. Entravision owned it and clear channel sold the advertising for it.

I completely agree, it's tiresome hearing the same 100 Classic Alt tunes over and over, ad nauseum. This has always been a quirky, off beat, self deprecating even, music format. How about instead of "Love Shack" dig deeper into the B-52's " Planet X" or play a classic tune by The Cramps. Have fun with the music. Alternative listeners know when they are listening to something that's corporate mandated. Sometimes I feel they don't have an understanding of who their listeners are

They were a station I heard about it but never got a chance to ever listen to., They went Spanish before I moved to Southern Cal. I would love to see what kind of playlist thy had.

I remember listening one time in afternoons to indie 103.1 in 07. TK I believe was doing afternoons and he said hey fall out boy is downstairs outside and they love this station and wants me to put them on and do a interview with them. So I will leave it up to the audience. That's how indie alternative they were no fall out boy. Don't know what happened had to go.

I agree. They DO rotate Planet Z and Goo Goo Muck but usually they're the start of a set, and the set starters are usually rotated less than everything else in the set that's more common. Maybe if they switched around what starts a set and what's played in the middle with less played songs it wouldn't be so boring.

Notes about Indie 103.1 off the top of my head:

A Frank Sinatra tune was played every afternoon.

Played artists such as Queen and Van Halen during regular play from time to time.

Bob Marley.

Tons of cool underground stuff like Ladytron "Destroy Everything You Touch."

Lots of diverse specialty shows.

Large doses of bands like Bright Eyes and Mars Volta.

A lack of an emphasis on guitar distortion. In fact, this station was a harbinger of the 'rock' vibe exiting commercial alternative (or returning to the non-rock vibe, depending on your perspective if you were a fan of the incarnation of the format pre-Nirvana), leading to a 'folk' and 'soft' sounding format nationwide in the 10s.

Once heard Indie 103.1 intentionally air Teddybears f Iggy Pop "Punkrocker" twice in a row.

In my view, one of the best radio stations to ever exist.

Audacy recently shut off a bunch of HD extra channels. In San Diego they had Flashback Alt on KyXy and Bob Radio (reggae) on 94.9. They still have KROQ "Roq of the 80s" on HD in LA, one of the few things they left alone. KPBS HD3 has Groove Salad from Soma FM, which is very boring to listen to. I wish they would put a AAA there. KCRW has a repeater in Lemon Grove, but it's just the main station, none of the HD extras. Plus it can only be heard in East County. I worked at 102.1 when it was Sets, and really liked the format. I was also at Z90 in 1989 when it had a similar AAA format. Although there is some music duplication, the songs on Sunny and Jack FM or K-Earth in LA were primarily hits in the 80s and 90s. A lot of 91X classics go beyond the hits. I would also love if 100.7 Big FM lived up to their "We Play Anything" and played some music newer than 2010. They could play some current AAA music and by default serve as both the AAA and Variety station for our market.

KPBS had Groove Salad? I love me a lot of downtempo stuff, and Soma is cool to me.
Yes, they still do, on their HD3. I don't hate it, but I don't think it makes for good in-car listening. It also seems to be a specialized stream, as it doesn't match the online stream of Groove Salad, but I would rather it be more of a AAA format, a la KCRW's Eclectic 24 or The 88.5 SoCal Sound format. Both have limited to no reach here in San Diego.

Kroq plays some of those in regular rotation. Anything Anything has been played in la for years on both Kroq and Alt 98.7
Yeah, that song has some strong staying power, even on most alternative current-based stations. I remember loving it on Pirate Radio when I was in college. I'm 53 now and still love it. It also gets airplay on Jack and K-Earth.

And alt 98.7 and Kroq play it in Los Angeles but it gets more airplay out west it seems. Great song. I was introduced to it cause this band I would go see in the 90s that did alt covers would cover it.

But it was never better than about 25th or so in ratings (I can check... but my point is that it did not have "salable" numbers ). It just could not generate enough audience to be warranted on ad buys.

David how did channel 103.1 do when it was AAA on that frequency or how did party 103.1 do on that frequency? Just curious how other formats have fared in comparison to indie 103.1

Does anyone have the dates for each format? I had no competitive interest in those so I did not pay much attention… and living in Glendale did not have much of a signal, either!

Channel 103.1 was October 19, 1998 to August 28, 2000. I don't recall and can't find anything on "Party 103.1", but Patrick may be referring to "KDL 103.1", which called itself "The Party Station" and ran the entire year of 2003.
