GSP November 2022

November’s numbers are out and here’s what it looks like:

-WHZT and WFBC flipped-flopped again with the former ticking up slightly while the latter dropped a full point.

-After an embarrassing October, WYRD ticked a bit up probably with the election news. WGTK also jumped close behind to a 3.0.

-WRTH and WSSL both slipped quite a bit.

-And finally playing Christmas music in November did absolutely nothing for WSPA with the station slightly trending down.

LOL, someone gave WYRD some CPR indeed. I haven’t listened lately, but I doubt anything significant has changed. The next year is going to be tough for them because it won’t be election season yet and with the divided Congress there won’t be anything major to talk about anymore because nothing will be done. No January 6th committee type stuff, likely no Supreme Court justices being nominated, etc.

X 98.5 was also down fairly significantly. WSSL seems to be running out of steam lately compared to their historical performance. The market definitely loves its classic rock with the performance of WROQ AND WMYI.

Glad to see WMYI didn’t follow its Charlotte sister “Lake” station with playing Christmas music. I don’t think they’re playing any at all.

I seem to recall these numbers aren't even for November. It may be that WSPA hadn't started playing Christmas music during the time period covered.

this release was august 17 to november 8, so it would include 1 week of christmas music. the next release will only include a little over a month of christmas music ending december 6. nielsen moved the survey period back years ago to minimize wild swings for their subscribers

Don't you mean September 17?

Well I believe it would also include 2 other weekends they went all-Christmas in that period, so it hasn’t done anything for the numbers. They must have a sweet deal with the sponsors.

Well since WSPA already went all Christmas they probably figured there was no additional audience for another Christmas format on WMYI. But I will say I prefer the normal variety hits format on Charlotte's 102.9 the Lake moreso than 102.5 the Lake in the Upstate, which used to be more similar but has now become more rock oriented. But there is now problematic interference with 102.9 from Charlotte since Salem added the hispanic format translator station on 102.9 from Paris Mountain. Now it interferes even in Spartanburg Cpunty where 102.9 from Charlotte used to be strong and clear. But my home radio pulls it in fine, even the HD, just a problem in some areas in the car in Spartanburg.

And I like Christmas music mixed in with the regular format like they are now doing on Mix 107.9 rather than all Christmas.

But I wonder why nobody is playing Whitney Houston's version of Do Your Hear What I Hear anymore. It was my favorite version of that Christmas song and I haven't heard it in recently in the past few years. Perhaps some sort of copyright or license issue?

More iHeart variety hits stations seem to have the rock oriented playlist. I would think WLKO has the more pop oriented playlist due to the powerhouse WRFX being in the same building as well as The End, and K-104.7 pulling in decent numbers for Beasley.

In Greenville, rock based variety hits probably makes more sense considering how well WROQ does. It keeps them behind WESC and maybe WSSL although they haven’t been doing as great lately. Seems like 102.5 may be hurting 103.3’s 80s/90s rock lean format yet still soft enough to probably not do 98.9 any favors.

LOL, most stations in the country have gone back to regularly scheduled programming but leave it to WSPA-FM to drag this in to the new year.

Thanks for telling me. I have a station for instrumental music but not the fun stuff (well, the other station has a few fun songs).

I think WSPA is a bit overkill with the All Christmas holiday format. WLKO swithced back the day after Christmas, and I would guess WKQC has as well. Nice to have holiday music on Magic 98.9, but Christmas is over. I guess they are going to drag it out until New Years.

Nothing wrong with continuing Christmas music. I'm not ready for it to end.

Last year I listened to The Oasis (online), which runs year-round, until I got tired of it.

Well, I guess they’re riding it out because they can’t play it again until July. I hope the transmitter doesn’t go in to withdrawals.

Looks like all of the social media as well as the website has been changed back, so maybe they’re going back to AC at the new years weekend.
