Changes coming to UNIVISION??

KOVE-FM is basically AC, with very little current music. Their numbers would likely fall if they did as you described, mixing current Regional Mexican hits with current Reggaeton hits.
You must not be a p1 since Amor happens to mix maybe not reggaeton but they can go from a bachata or a pop song to a current regional Mexican song I never said it was urban

I'm not a P1, but I do listen from time to time. I'm aware that they do mix bachata and pop with Regional Mexican, but that's not far from the norm for a Spanish AC to do. Maybe you didn't intend for it to mean Reggaeton, but it got kind of confusing when you mentioned San Antonio's KMYO earlier, which mostly plays Reggaeton.

Who was talking about KMYO I said 92.9

You kidding me David ? Pantera is a direct competitor to 92.9 in San Antonio even programmed by a guy you know well
It's also an affiliate of the Univision sports network, making it a business associate.

A Spanish language AC in the Southwest may combine what I named "balada Mexicana" in the format, but not hard-core regional. Back in 1995 when we reformatted all-over-the-road KLVE to AC, we did about 6 months just doing international pop and ballads, and managed to get a decades-long 2-share station into the 4's.

Then, in research for our AM station we discovered that there was a crossover category of soft regional songs from big name artists that were, simply, ballads with a different orchestration.

We added Pepe Aguilar, Marco Antonio Solis, Juanga's rancheras and even some Chente and went up to over a 7 share and #1 in LA with those "Mexican ballads".

Bachata is a "poor people's" music from the central part of the Dominican Republic. There are crossover songs, but the idea that bachatas are a mainstream genre is inaccurate. In fact, when I set up and programmed Z-101 in Santo Domingo, we would not have been "caught dead" programming bachatas in the Capital!

Reggaetón and its derivatives has become the pop music of Latin America now. Heck, even my grandson in Ecuador has a local hit release in the genre under his name of "Toxic Chaman".

I don’t know seems all over the place to me .. Cumbia ,norteño,pop, balads, rancheras , reguetton (maluma) all over the place then again David you haven’t consulted Univision in a few years now .

I don't speak Spanish, but I do know who Luis Miguel, La Mafia, Shakira, Juan Gabriel, Mana, and Fonseca are. And all these acts are played on KOVE from time to time.

At this point, Amor is just a "Jack-FM" type of format with music that is (or was) popular with older spanish speaking Mexican-American listeners. I agree that calling KOVE "AC en español" or even "Mexican Ballads" seems like a stretch. But alas, I'm no "experto".

KOVE picked "Spanish Adult Hits" as its format descriptor from Nielsen. That's logical, because we petitioned Arbitron back about 15 or 16 years ago to add that format name to the limited list of options for Hispanic targeted Spanish language formats.

Like Jack in English, the format is many decades wide, and covers basically light ranchera, grupera, norteña, ballads, mainstream pop, light Mexican tropical (not sonidero) and even some crossover banda.

All the artists you list are very mainstream AC, being as playable in Chile as in Chilpancingo with, depending on the song, the possible exception of La Mafia which is a US and, mostly, Texas phenomenon..

You say that but i could name a few that have taken that approach and are doing well.
I can't think of any... and I did my first station in the Southwest, KWKW in LA, back in about 1972.

Who's running Pantera? The licensee of KFLZ is the people that own 1540 KEDA, apparently. That's a competitor to KXTN. I believe Pantera is ran by a different entity though.

Pantera is leased out by Gerardo Lopez a ex Univision employee.
And his wife, known as Chiquibaby, is the midday personality. They are both truly nice people, too. I hired Stephanie (her real name, of course) out of Fresno for KLQV in San Diego, and later we moved her up to LA where she met Gerardo... and, as they say, "the rest is history".

Do you think it still makes sense to call the station "Amor" at this point? "Mas Variedad" always made sense given the format and the demographics of the listeners.

Or is the entire theme of the format "Love" based songs, regardless of genre?

As has been said elsewhere, the problem with station names lies in finding ones that are not already registered legally. The "Recuerdo" name was not the first choice in 2000 when it started in LA, and it became very much dated over time.

I still think KOVE should be called LATINO MIX, 104.9 should go back to the TU MÚSICA name
