Big 105.3

I'm surprised nobody here has mentioned Big 105.3 yet. I literally just discovered it when tuning my radio. I'm getting WUBG in Natick okay during the daytime, but now it's starting to fade. What do people think of it?

But nobody seemed to actually talk about how the music is or how the programming is.

I do have to say it’s interesting how now we have so many low-power oldies and classic hits stations. As of now, we have:

105.7 WROR
Easy 99.1
MyFM 101.3
WCRN 830 (at night)
Big 105.3
98.9 The Valley
WNNH
1250 in Manchester and 990 in Nashua

Any other’s I left out?

Oh yes, WOON 1240. And how could I leave out WJIB?

The station has been mentioned on here before. Anyway Bruce Palmer voice tracks on the station. If you go by BIG1053.COM he's on 6AM-2PM.

Quite the strange schedule (time-wise) with Bruce Palmer listed as mornings (from 6am all the way until 2pm); Cheree Carter (who I've never heard of but looks pretty hot) listed as afternoons from 2pm all the way until 10pm; and some guy named Joe Jacobs who is listed for afternoons but apparently works overnight from 10pm until 6am. I'll have to give this station a listen.

If you do a search on the DJ names, you'll find that they all work for a nationally syndicated format called Good Time Oldies.

It has a bigger and better variety than the local Oldies station here in Southington, Connecticut Kool 990/96.1. 3 other reasons I like BIG 105.3 better than my local Oldies station.

1. Big 105.3 DOES NOT air the awful Wolfman Jack Show.

2. Big 105.3 DOES NOT have a top of the hour newscast.

3. Big 105.3 DOES NOT interrupt the format for 5 1/2 hours every Sunday for Italian Programming and a Lutheran Church Mass for shut-ins.

Classic Hits 97.7/1250 in Ware, Massachusetts. 940 AM in Webster, Mass.

Wolfman does play some off-the-wall tracks, though -- mainly songs that have fallen out of favor on classic hits stations due to audience research since Jack's death.

Which makes me wonder: How many hours of the Wolfman are available through the syndicator? Is Kool already into reruns?

Don't know, but what I can tell you is when I was looking up the show I came across a site that says each station that is granted permission to air the show can air it 10 hours per week and that's what Kool does. 12PM-1PM Monday-Friday. Saturdays 7PM-Midnite.

Big 105.3 is an absolute mess in my opinion. There's nothing local about it. How about hiring some actual local airstaff and changing the format entirely (something younger skewing, but hyper focused on north suburban Boston)? Besides, that same company owns Valley 98.9, which has a much better signal that can go from Waltham, MA to past Manchester, NH!

Syndie jukebox but they feel it can make money. Then there's "Keep It Local" 104.9 which has local DJs in morning and evening drive but is syndicated otherwise. Local ads though.

The idea in Big's case is to play music and put on a national DJ to make a few comments. The jingle runs to give listeners a reminder. As they drive out to a convenience store, or have a boombox playing at their worksite, they can hear Three Dog Night, Eagles, Cher etc. Then they hear spots for a local restaurant or store. It isn't a local jock connecting to the audience.

McRadio generic classic hits.Heard on stations all over...on the cheap.

With what money?

And why tackle young-skewing big boys like Kiss, Jam'n or Mix in the northern suburbs with a pipsqueak signal? WBOQ is kind of trying that, but already we're seeing cost cutting taking place. Big personality radio has little appeal to millennials -- it's their parents' and grandparents' radio.

They're running ads on Big for a service that allows people to produce podcasts. It's called CEM --wild guess, that stands for Costa-Eagle Media. The owners.

Exactly. Most people just want to hear the music. Shut up and play more Three Dog Night or Blood Sweat & Tears.

You can spend money on talent, but if the music sucks, no one will listen.

This particular service says they have a large library and specialize on "oh wow" songs.

There is now a new (or perhaps strengthened) pirate on 105.3 from the Boston inner city playing overmodulated, distorted Caribbean or Haitian music interfering with or completely cutting out "Big 105.3" anywhere more than a couple of miles south of its Medford tower, including the Charles River side of Cambridge and anywhere across the river in Boston.

Due to its radical southward directional null, "Big 105.3" was spotty or fringe in those areas before, but it was listenable in good spots. Not anymore. The pirate is even interfering with it where I live in Somerville, just a couple of miles south of the tower.

Yup, that is our old friend "Big City" (originally 101.3, then 102 (?) something, then 100.3, then, finally, replacing "Vibe 105" on 105.3, until the FCC busted them earier this Spring). I first noted them late nite last night/early this morning.
Also, I noted the other big, unlicensed, commercial station wanna-be, on 87.7 (which also got busted the same time as "Big City"), back on the night/morning before!
