Joe Mathieu Starts Thursday

WGBH announced today that Joe Mathieu starts as the new local host of Morning Edition this Thursday (8/10). I'll be looking forward to see how he sounds and fits in. Should be a good addition to the news team.

Jeff B's pipes are an easy listen.

If it is, in fact, the case that Jeff Brown is the new permanent morning anchor, I would like to see WBZ Radio put a formal announcement out indicating that. I haven't seen that yet.

I'd like for Jeff Brown to have the slot, but he did just inherit the PM drive slot only months ago. It was my impression, also, that Jeff's gig in AM drive will last until a new morning anchor is identified.

At least he won't have to work with "that woman" who used to host "Three Sheets To The Wind Overnights" w/ JB!,.. back in the day (or nite) at BEEZEE! :)

Alright, so I tuned in to Morning Edition on Wednesday of this week.

Full disclosure: I am not now, nor have I ever been, a regular listener to Morning Edition.

But it was pretty much what I expected it to be based on my infrequent sampling of it over the years: the broadcast consists primarily of feeds from NPR with relatively short intervals allotted for local insertion, i.e., where Joe Mathieu would be on.

So now I'm left scratching my head as to why Joe would trade his shift on WBZ, where he was the star morning anchor, for but a few minutes of air time each half-hour. It can't be the hours: both broadcasts run 5:00 to 10:00 AM. Is it because 'GBH leans more to the left than does 'BZ? I like Joe and liked his delivery style on WBZ, but what am I failing to understand here?

There are several local inserts during each half hour and he has more opportunity to do in depth interviews and longer form stories. Plus, I bet he got more dough. Also, he may be uncomfortable with the Entercom takeover.

No it had nothing to do with where the station "leans." At the time the rumor was that he wanted another contract and the station isn't doing any, while in the process of being sold.
I would doubt Joe would have left because of a preference for GBH over 'BZ news.

The bigger picture is WGBH has a focus on building their news service, WBZ is being swept up in a merger between CBS and Entercom, with Entercom's " experts" in charge of programming.
One of a few things could happen.
With Entercom in charge, all bets are off about the future of the news programming.
If it's spun off, all bets are off.
Either way, WBZ doesn't seem to be making clear headed commitments right now.
Or the unexpected, that a new owner will commit to the news programming.
Or nothing will change

If you read talkers.com, which also covers music radio now, the impression is clear that CBS Radio is appointing/hiring people at all levels to all sorts of positions, both on-air and off-air. If I knew nothing at all about an impending Entercom/CBS thingie, I could conclude CBS Radio is doing very well and is positioning itself for the future.

Perhaps Joe asked for way more than what CBS had offered?

Is it possible that public radio, even a behemoth like WGBH, can outdo a commercial operation like CBS Radio when it comes to salaries?

Can and unlike Entercom, WILLING

I remember when Josh used to be repped by the late Ruth Clennet.

I would like to see Joe Mathieu as a possible host of Greater Boston, I find Jim Braude too abrasive, and I think Joe Mathieu is a better interviewer.

No. Jim Braude stays

No. Jim Braude stays

I'm with you, Norm; I've liked Braude since he was at WTKK. In fact, I enjoyed "Jim and Margery" a lot more than Boston Public Radio, where they're in to authors and other artsy types that play to 'GBH's audience.

But Braude has a wry sense of self-deprecating humor which I enjoy.

Joe may have a great sense of humor, too, but, of course, in his role as news anchor that doesn't quite fly.
