Tacoma 101.9

It's not KTAH-LP but it's on 101.9 and covers south Tacoma/Parkland. It sounds good and could easily fool some one into thinking it's licensed, but I can't find anything. It really does not affect KVSH-LP, Voice of Vashon. But it will affect KTAH if they go on the air in the next few months.

If I had to put my finger on their transmitter location I would say a mile or two within Fern Hill, Hwy7 and 84th.

There's a 101.9 translator at Kamilche that gets out remarkably well. Interferes with one of my FMs.

This was a Spanish language format. I could make them out saying out South Tacoma. Signal seems centered around Fern Hill area in Tacoma.

Isn't that the same Spanish station that used to be on some oddball channel like 93.1 in Tacoma? I can't remember exactly, but it was on an IBOC channel.

All 3 of the FMs at Kamilche are surprisingly strong...103.3 is no slouch either. Picked them up when I lived in NW Lynnwood fairly regularly. Also know that 101.9 can be heard right near the sound in Seattle until you hit the tall buildings in Belltown.

The pirate en espanol is not surprising, though. For months, a Spanish Christian pirate parked on 107.3 in Seattle...after KBFG got their CP. Don't know if they were asked to pipe down, but they went off the air a few months ago.

Pretty soon the pirates will be driven out of Western Washington...not because of enforcement...because there won't be a frequency left to broadcast on!

Radio-X

Is Kamilche "Maxwell Hill"? At least thats what I call it from the amateur repeaters in the area. I find KMAS 103.3 translator to fade out more so than 101.9 going south. 103.3 is good for the N part of Thurston County but fades around Tumwater. 101.9 is good til about exit 95. Off-topic/// 101.1 KGHO seems to be playing more harder rock.

I think what was meant was HD is refered to as I-block because it shuts out DX on channels adjacent to the station running HD. That still leaves it rather open-ended though, as the only two commercial fm signals in this market not in hd are 101.5 and 104.5. That means that the pirate in question can be on 92.3, 92.7, 93.1, 93.5, 93.9, 94.3, 94.7, 95.1, 95.5, 95.9, 96.3, 96.7, 97.1, 97.5, 97.9, 98.3, 98.7, 99.1, 99.7, 100.1, 100.5, 100.9, 102.3, 102.7, 103.1, 103.5, 103.9, 104.7, 105.1, 105.5, 105.9, 106.3, 106.7, 107.1, 107.5, or 107.9.

The pirate I believe was on 93.1, and could be heard at SR-512 near the I-5 interchange in Parkland/South Tacoma. It was an SSer. Apparently 92.1 K221FJ is still on the air // KNTB, which is now La Estacion de La Familia (believe // KLSY-93.7). KNTB was ESPN Deportes until 2014 I think.

Why isn't 101.5 in HD by now? Major station, big-ish owners... (sorry if off-topic)

I've heard Alpha, the fourth largest radio operator, is pretty anti-HD. The only one of their stations in HD in Portland is KINK, and that one feeds a translator, which rebroadcasts an AM.

It didn't happen, KISW is broadcasting in HD with an HD-2 right now as I type. HD2 is "The Metal Channel" Just played "Turbo Lover"

If you're into live performances, KISW had one of the coolest HD channels back when I had an HD radio, live performances of rock songs. Unfortunately, they've since replaced it with the metal channel. I still think the Christa HD channels are pretty cool, and probably the only place for AAA in Seattle outside of KEXP or maybe KHTP-HD2.

That's correct, my HD radio at the time must have been doing something weird. Thanks for the correction.

Maxwell Hill is to the south along hwy 8 and is where KYYO is located; Kamilche Point is a few miles north along 101. If you are looking west on 101 at Little Creek Casino, Maxwell Hill is about a mile or so out southwest of the casino and Kamilche is about a mile or so out northwest of it. KYYO is on a standalone guyed tower, while Kamilche is a squat self supporting tower with KRXY, KMAS and a number of other repeaters, US Cellular, and amatuer radio on it. Kamilche is about 100 meters shorter than Maxwell.

Re 101.5: Fisher didn't see the need for an HD facility, and apparently Sinclair hasn't either. I believe it costs over a hundred grand to buy an transmitter to run HD, plus licensing from iBiquity.
Can't blame 'em. Nothing to be gained.
Incidentally, CBS stations are running lots of promos on their HD channels for HD itself. Pointless. (If you don't have HD you won't hear the promos; if you do, you don't need the promos.)

How are the regular FMs making money off of the HD2/3's? Or are they losing money by still running those things with fewer than 100 listeners at a time, if at all? On the other hand, KHHK is HD here in Yakima for only one reason...not to provide extra HD-only channels, but as the primary feed for two analog FM translators of the HD2/3 feeds. They are Big 106.1 (CHR/Hot AC) and 106.9 X-FM (Alternative). They have an audience in the valley.
