WMMR and Coldplay

As Coldplay makes a run at the title of one of the biggest bands in the world, MMR is left playing catch up. As Philadelphia's heritage rocker they missed on Coldplay by 5 years or so.

So now that MMR is in catch up mode, are we going to hear more Coldplay, Kaiser Chiefs, Strokes, etc (the next wave) instead of Alice in Chains, Nirvana, and VH?

The BBC said this during its Live 8 coverage

Even if we assume that Coldplay is one of the biggest bands in the world, that doesn't mean they are right for MMR. Remember, The Backstreet Boys were one of the biggest bands in the world at one point. To be honest, as a frequent MMR listener, I'm not excited about hearing a bunch of Coldplay. I think they are a little light for the MMR mix. Though I probably wouldn't change the station if I heard them once in a while. And yes, MMR will be playing catch up. They have always, always been slow to add new music. They are conservative with their new music. Sometimes they miss the wave, sometimes they avoid hopping on some stupid fad. It averages out. I thank them for doing that whole anti rap-rock thing a few years ago, though I think it was oveer the top. There are maybe 3 tunes in that genre I would be able to tolerate. I mostly hate that junk and am glad MMR didn't go that route like YSP did. It's over, and MMR avoided it. Good for them. It is not always good to be on the cutting edge.
Edited by pifflestick on 07/08/05 12:11 PM.

Just to put the BBC comment in context, they described Coldplay as the band who is passing U2 as the worlds biggest band. Their comments are coming after Coldplay's new album X & Y went #1 in 38 countries and moved a heck of alot of albums in the past three weeks. While the Backstreet boys are a "boy band" Coldplay is certainly a rock and roll band from England who traces its sounds to other great British rock and roll bands like Travis, Radiohead, etc. Other than XPN who is playing this obviously successful brand of rock music in this city?

I have to disagree, respectfully, with the idea that MMR, which is a harder rocker, is somehow batting zero because they failed to play enough or any Coldplay. Coldplay has always been a core Alternative group...since they formed.

They are so huge now that MMR could probably be playing them (at least their harder-edged stuff) without problems. But, originally, stations like XPN were the venue of choice for them.

Thanks

This is not about Coldplay, its about MMR. I guess as a fan of its "heritage" MMR's brand provided equal time to all forms of Rock, not just the Alice in Chains of the world. I guess I miss rock radio where I can hear something new and not always with crunching guitars.

I'm confused; you mentioned Coldplay twice in your original post and whether MMR had "missed the boat" by not playing them. I answered that post by discussing Coldplay and MMR. Now, you say "This is not about Coldplay; it's about MMR"?!?!

Huh?!?! Then why bring up the nexus of Coldplay and MMR in the first place? No more caffeine for you, bucko. LOL

How about their string of sold out shows in gigantic venues? That'll do.

And as for this thread, I suppose WMMR didn't want to cater to y100 fans until y100 was gone... hence the catching up now. It's Radio One that "missed the beat" :)
