WGOP Pocomoke City goes up in flames - literally

Wow, I used to pick up this frequency in Hampton Roads, VA in the late 70s/early 80s when the calls were WDMV. As the station is at the left end of the dial, its Top 40/AC format came in loud and clear in the middle of the day!

The FCC granted the $200K sale on 5/19/2023 for WGOP and its FM translator. WBWD with 10kw from Islip dominates the frequency for now and even before...

Did they use MacPaint and a dot matrix printer to make that drawing? 10 watts is most likely a TIS transmitter.

The "temporary transmitter site" is a bunch of cell phone antennas mounted on top of a high-tension power line tower. Not sure how well that'll work for AM, with all that RF and EMI in the vicinity.

The translator STA application specified 50 watts ERP at 82.3 meters above ground level, non-directional. The translator STA authorized 2 watts ERP. The AM station STA application specified 10 watts transmitter power output. This application was granted.

Both stations were silent and approaching automatic license cancellation of silent stations. FCC authorization of these temporary facilities enabled the stations to return to the air and avoid cancellation of the licenses.

The above is not unusual. The FCC grants STAs to permit immediate or temporary operation of certain radio facilities during emergencies or other urgent conditions. In this case a fire essentially destroyed the station building. The licensee now has an opportunity restore licensed operation or file an application for minor change to the licensed facilities.

Best of luck to them. 540 is a good frequency.
