Twitch streamer Kai Cenat in custody after NYC console giveaway causes chaos at Union Square Park

Note this host also does shows on Youtube. But then again if this person really had the fans he has then his production staff could have handled something that does not spark riots on the streets.

UNION SQUARE, Manhattan (WABC) -- Thousands of people overran Union Square Park and surrounded lanes of traffic Friday as a popular Twitch streamer held a video game giveaway.

Just before 5 p.m. police had gained the upper hand on the crowd as many people began to disperse.

NYPD sources had told Eyewitness News they did not want to arrest people and they did not want to escalate the situation further. Despite that guidance, Eyewitness News observed several arrests being made as prisoners were loaded onto an MTA bus.

At a 6 p.m. briefing police said they took dozens into custody and we're told charges against many are pending.

Here is more on the background of the host.

UNION SQUARE, Manhattan (WABC) -- The crowd of thousands of people who gathered in New York City's Union Square on Friday afternoon did so for an Internet personality's hyped giveaway.

Kai Cenat, 21, is a video creator with 6.5 million followers on the streaming platform Twitch, where he regularly livestreams.

He also boasts 4 million subscribers on YouTube, where he posts daily life and comedy vlogs ranging from "Fake Hibachi Chef Prank!" to his most recent video, "I Rented Us Girlfriends In Japan!"

His 299 YouTube videos have amassed more than 276 million views.

In 2022, he was crowned streamer of the year at the 12th annual Streamy Awards.

Half the blame falls on the crowd itself while you were there in hopes of winning a console, it DOES NOT give you the right to riot

No excuse for it
True and the rest goes to the host and production staff of the Twitch show that organized this event. They could have put money to reserve events at a stadium, get security and local police in advanced when a major event happens if this group really has the fans he have.

I see what you did there! 😉
Yes it's a double reference to this and the unrelated event surrounding Trump.

Back to this one apparently Kai Cenat has gotten attention to certain celebrities named in this article leading up to this event. Also one of the colonists commented on how Kai Cenat's staff could have handled the incident prior to this.

According to NPR, popular music artists such as Drake, Ice Spice, Lil Baby and Lil Uzi Vert have joined Cenat live on camera.
Lorenz knows it's something we'll have to get used to but says there's a much better way for influencers with millions of followers to meet their fans -- using permits and possibly a cap for the amount of fans who can snag a freebie.

"You have to have an RSVP system, ideally, because if you have millions and millions of followers online, you just say, hey, anybody come, come, you yourself don't know," she said.

Police say Cenat did not obtain any permits for Friday's giveaway at Union Square.

"There's a team of people around influencers like this that really handle their business affairs, handle their public events, handle their press, I think those people-- the buck falls with Kai, sure, but I think those people are to blame as well," Lorenz said.

Here are the charges for Kai Cenat and the 65 people detained so far.

Sixty-five people were arrested, including 30 juveniles, and several police officers and civilians were injured in the melee at Union Square park, Jeffrey Maddrey, the New York Police Department's highest-ranking uniformed officer, told a news conference late on Friday.

Some in the crowd threw projectiles at police, climbed onto the roof of a subway entrance and jumped on top of cars.

Cenat, best known for his live streams on the gaming site Twitch and YouTube videos, was also charged with unlawful assembly, Maddrey said.

Or simply do what most (All??) Twitch streamers do & make it an ONLINE giveaway like they do codes for games & DLC

This way, NO ONE dies because THERE IS NO RIOT

Update the PR Company that represents Kai Cenat apologizes over the fallout of the Union Square incident.
This is the kind of thing that puts people on THE UNEMPLOYMENT LINE !! (Seeing heads roll past my feet enroute to the Unemployment Office)
