The AM version of KPIG

I'm thrilled to have them in SF, the music mix is stellar, but the feed to the AM transmitter seems to be missing a channel -- not immediately noticeable most of the time, but when they play something heavily separated (like a lot of old Beatles stuff) it becomes obvious.

It has been noted in ba.broadcast that they may be running their Internet feed over 1510, and that some records may sound like only one channel is coming through.

If this was some other station owned by one of the majors, I'd say they were cheapskates. But because it's the Piggies, I think it's kind of quaint.

One channel is better than having a mono version of stereo with one channel out of phase with the other :)

That yeilds no audio from "centered" sources, and some strange sounding accompaniment, especially if there was a lot of reverb in the original mix.

I suspected that might be the explanation... since I haven't heard a commercial (well, except for the fake ones) all week.

tell me how to manage sending stereo audio through shoutcast as a mono stream and make it sound good. i tried downmixing to mono but that made it all nasty and loud and distorted.

any quick ideas.<P ID="signature">______________

As I may (or may not, I forget) have mentioned in ba.broadcast, the imbalance seems most noticeable on the tunes that are being used to cover up the Monterey-market spots.

The frequency response of the station seems "off" too. It seems to be rolling off around 7 or 8 kHz and some have noticed that the low end sounds a little thin, too. However, I live in one of the station's nulls, so there could be some interaction with the pattern that is messing up the frequency response. The phenomenon doesn't occur on all my radios, and is most noticeable on my 1980s stereo-capable radios (even when they're in mono).

Even so, I am hoping this is just a transitional situation and that it will be fixed.

The keys are "nasty... Loud... Distorted." Those are symptoms of too hot a signal hitting either an amp or a digital device (like your computer.)

So... see when happens when you reduce your levels before you sum to Mono--

When you add L+R, the signals add together, making a signal that has more voltage (more volume) that the L or R measured separately.

That's especially true of things that are "mono" in the first place, like centered audio... lead singers, narration, etc.

So, you need to back things down a tad so you don't overload any amplifiers, or drive a digital device above 100% modulation. Unlike analog stuff, digital only goes to 100% and then sounds ugly.

Most of the time, you might want to peak at -12 to leave some headroom for spikes of audio that you otherwise can't anticipate or control.

See if that makes a difference in your shoutcast stream.

Ted.

Thanks, Ted. I will fiddle with my stream as you said. I don't have the bandwidth to send a decent stereo stream and I hate hearing one channel or the other way in the background.
