Your hint to help narrow it down...

It is in a market with only one Rhythmic as of right now.

I was going to guess Bakersfield ... Monterey would be interesting.

But you have to define rhythmic. KMEL is Urban with BDS, but rhythmic with R&R.

Well let's see...

KPWR/Los Angeles: So far the only competiton they have so far R&B/Hip-Hop rivals KDAY/KDAI and KKBT, Hurban newcomer KXOL(Latino 96.3)[which is also the subject of a lawsuit by KPWR's owner Emmis because of a transmitter agreement], and Rhythmic-leaning Mainstream Top40 KIIS[who just knocked Power 106 out of 1st place in the recent Arbitrends]. Plus there the "?" sign hanging around Oldies KRTH, so we could see some scenarios in that situation.

KDON/Monterey-Salinas: Having seen the last two stations failing to beat 102.5 the only way that could happen would have be on more powerful signal.

KYLD/San Francisco: Unless Dance rival KNGY(Energy 92.7) moves to a larger signal then there would be an issue. Plus KMEL seems to be on a roll lately so they're safe. Then there's the future of what will happen to the 106.9 signal, not to mention whats going to happen in Top40-less San Jose.

KKUU/Palm Springs: Well they did end KPSI's Rhythmic run several years back, but well have to see how things heat up there.

KEWB/Redding: Safe for now.

KZAP/Chico: Also safe, unless KLRS(Colors 92.7) flips.

KHTN/Modesto: See KEWB.

They already have 2: KISV and KBDS.

That's been an issue with both stations since 1997. The only difference is KMEL targets African-Americans and KYLD focus on Hispanics and Asians. But BDS seems to be more accurate with their criteria because of the musical and audience makeup of both stations.

106 KMEL

KMEL is definitely an Urban because their music selection and overall programming schedule mirrors that of a typical Urban. R&R need to stop fooling themselves, how many Rhythmics do you know that airs an gospel show and public affairs show on Sundays (besides KDGS Wichita which I believe is an Urban also).<P ID="signature">______________
