While attempting to drive home to Newark, Del from Ridley Park on I-95 yesterday afternoon, I decided to scan the AM band while drifting along at 10mph.

Just on the southside of Wilmington the scan hit 1550. I was surprised to hear ESPN Radio. Turns out WSER turned WXHL-AM and playing CCM has now become WSRY airing ESPN. I would joke and say the station's nickname should be "Sorry AM", but the truth is the signal carries well across New Castle County, much better in fact than the "amateur hour" broadcasts on 1260.

So now New Castle County has both Fox Sports Net and ESPN. 1550 has not made a dent in the Wilmington Market ratings since 1969. It would be interesting to see if they show up now. The station was airing Newark and Christiana area ads.

I wish them luck. 1550 is heavily directional and also has very little night
coverage. They're a Class D with only ONE WATT at night.

And basically, that 1 watt just hits Main Street in Elkton. They are stuck with only 1 watt also until sunrise (7:30am in January).

Yikes... isn't the pretty much like feeding the signal into a dummy load?

No luck hearing them today in Montgomery County.

They make Fox Sports 920 sound like they have a grandfathered signal.

You can't hear them north beyond the Newark/Christiana area. Their signal is patterned to protect 1540 in Philly. They have a good signal into Newark, south New Castle county, part of Kent and three Maryland counties.

My old Hallicrafters HT-37 had a better signal using a dummy load than WSRY has at night! At least using the dummy, I was able to cause TVI 3 rooms away!

At one time, the old WSER managed to sell ads for night time shows. But then the sponsor tried to hear the ads on the air! Oops!
