MLB All-Star Game: 'O Canada' rendition with 'All Lives Matter' lyric sparks outrage

O Canada, you have a controversy on your hands.

A performance of the Canadian national anthem at the MLB All-Star Game on Tuesday by The Tenors stirred outrage on social media, thanks to altered lyrics that contained the phrase “all lives matter.”

According to CBC, the quartet changed the lyrics to, “We’re all brothers and sisters. All lives matter to the great.”

The phrase “all lives matter” is regarded by many as a response to the Black Lives Matter movement, which has gained widespread attention due to a number of high-profile shootings.

The change of lyrics didn’t sit well with many on social media.

“Changing lyrics to O Canada is disrespectful and ignorant. @TenorsMusic I’m American and ashamed of you,” one detractor wrote.

“Memo to MLB: if you’re looking to attract black fans and players, All Lives Mattering the anthem — even O Canada — ain’t the way to do it,” said another critic.

Not that big of a deal. He shouldn't have abused his invitation to sing O' Canada, but it's hard to argue that All Lives do, or at least should, matter. Any criticism on MLB because of this is misplaced. MLB clearly didn't endorse, nor was the league aware of, any plans to change the lyrics.

Dang though but then again the Phrase "All Lives Matter" is offensive on this side of the Border for pretty obvious reasons from last week from Dallas, Baton Rouge and Minneapolis.

It is a big deal. If you can't sing it as written, and you can't read music either, then don't accept the invitation.

IMO it is a big deal because it offends and insults our closest friend and ally.
O' Canada is a beautiful song as-written.

Although there is a move afoot in the Canadian Parliament to change the "sexist" phrase "in all thy sons command" to the neutered "in all of us command." But that's hardly as extreme as introducing a completely new passage into the lyric.

Present issues notwithstanding, the real crime here is that no one saw it in the U.S. That's because Fox always times a commercial break with the playing of the Canadian national anthem, and they've been doing it for as long as I remember.

That alone is insulting to our northern neighbors, and Fox has never been called out on it.

And these articles will explain why "All Lives Matter" became offensive here in the USA. I don't think Canada knew that meaning.
