Look out ol'Mackie is back

Mack The Knife by Bobby Darin this afternoon on Mike. This has to be the oldest song I've heard on the station & I'm wondering why this one specifically? Is it well enough known by most ages? This week's release of Beyond The Sea on DVD (doubtful)? Has anyone heard anything else from the 50s to the mid 60s? I realize oldies from the 50s/60s standpoint are pretty much over as a format, but if variety formats prove successful I wonder if the more recognizable songs will eventually make their way back to FM radio...not as a format in themselves but as part of this whole "everything" craze.

When you come right down to it, the more conservative songs of 50s & early 60s have found a place in radio on easy type formats like WPLM but the actual rock songs of those years that paved the way for future rock found themselves with nowhere to go. I know Little Richard would agree, but the last person we need on this board is Little Richard.

Wasn't it McDonald's that used a variation of the song in an ad campaign some years back? Because every time I hear the song I get the urge to go out and get myself a couple of Big Macs...'cause it's Mac Tonight!!

I think you're correct on this one. Lincoln Park in RI is now using Beyond The Sea on spots for one of their new casino rooms. Nothing like using a song in a spot to give it familiarity. My Mom can even hum Thick As A Brick, but I'd never expose her to the original in its' entirety.

Which brings up a pet peeve of mine: use of popular music in commercials. I have no problem if an advertiser uses a popular tune and rewrites the lyrics to suit their product (as McDonald's did with "Mac the Knife"). That shows at least some originality and creativity. But to just slap a song as is onto a spot (for instance Cadillac's use of Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll" in TV spots) just irritates me no end. But in any event, it seems to work for the advertiser. Here we are talking about them. People will hear the song on the radio and associate the song with the product. But as a music lover, I'd rather not have the masses associate my favorite songs with various consumer products. Not much one can do about it, though, unless one owns the rights to the song in question. Just my two cents...
