KXOL(Latino 96.3) to build new tower site in Verdugo Hills

Billboard Radio Monitor has reported on its website today(June 30th) that Hurban KXOL(Latino 96.3) will vacate the tower space they were leasing from Emmis before the July 15th date and move to a new tower site which is expected to be built in Verdugo Hills, where Infinity have their towers. The changes, once approved by the FCC, will allow them to gain 700 ft above sea level.

The move is expected to quell complaints from Emmis, who went to court May 31st and filed a lawsuit against KXOL's parent company SBS after the latter flipped formats, thus breaking a leasing agreement in which the deal calls for SBS to notify Emmis of a change in format as long as it doesn't compete with either of Emmis' Los Angeles properties.

Can they get a new xmitter site up that fast?

Looking at the maps, it appears this will only have a minimal effect on overall coverage in the region.

Off topic but..

I had been doing some research on this location when I was looking into 1500AM.

From what I could determine, the KBLA/KBBQ/KROQ-AM towers (six) still exist in the Verdugos. One of the old towers is currently being used as an KROQ aux, and a new stick was built for KROQ. I assume this near/at the location of the new KXOL stick.
Edited by myopic on 06/30/05 10:22 PM.

And there is the major problem, if SBS expects this to take care of their legal problems. The FCC doesn't always approve things quickly, and there is still the matter of constructing the new site (transmitter, antenna, etc.)

This move by SBS actually improves Emmis' chance of getting a damage award, since they can now point to this move as "proof" SBS knows it is at fault.

SBS is still being stupid, IMHO.

Not at all. If one is able to view this objectively, SBS can simply be separating itself from a problem: a hostile xmtr site landlord. If the move provides even an incremental improvement in signal (certainly no reduction), SBS has two reasons to relocate its plant.

If you think Emmis' attorneys won't present it to the court the way I said, then you're not being objective either.

Anybody can present anything to a court in whatever way they choose. Doesn't mean they'll win with it.

Emmis gets the relief it's seeking - KXOL won't be on their tower much longer. Maybe Emmis gets damages for the time KXOL was broadcasting a "competitive" format from its tower, maybe they don't. I don't see SBS' efforts to move to a different tower site without those lease restrictions as changing anything - it was the only viable outcome, really, if you accept that there's no reason for SBS to go back to "El Sol" now. Emmis knows it can't make that happen.
______________

It's a reduction in signal, and a move about 12 km farther away from the center of Hispanic population in LA. Additinally, it is highly directional.
