KCUR 89.3 KC needs a new transmitter

im gonna guess they also have to replace the coax and antenna too... a 20,000 watt transmitter would run.... $100,000 or so.

am 8 to 10 bay antenna.. another $50 to $60 grand... cable.. several dozen grand.. and all the time and technical expertise to install it

KCUR 89.3 is asking on Facebook for donations for a new transmitter.
Facebook post/video

Their current one is apparently around 30 years old... Supposedly if you donate, the Sunderland Foundation will match your gift. But that's a lot of money for a new transmitter, their website says $250000.
As SomeRadioGuy mentioned, a transmitter is expensive. And if their main transmitter is failing, the auxiliary is likely in the same shape. So two transmitters, labor, coax within the building, wiring, etc. can easily be 250 k without even changing the antenna and coax.

Keep in mind that if outside engineering is required, that will be very expensive. And there are some lesser costs in things like FCC filings and such.

Not sure if the current transmitter is failing, it's up and on the air all the time, heard it off for an hour or two once at night though.
But it's 30 years old so maybe it has problems an outsider doesn't know about.
