KCET, KLCS to partner up

http://www.tvnewscheck.com/article/79139/kcet-klcs-in-channelsharing-partnership

KCET and KLCS will enter a channel-sharing partnership, in which one of the two stations (it didn't signify which one, but it looks it'll be KLCS) will surrend 6 MHz of their broadcasting spectrum to the FCC, which would be part of a spectrum auction. Both station would maintain separate licences, and operate independently of each other.

I don't know...from what Jerome is saying, it sounds like KCET is the one surrendering its broadcast spectrum. They're the poor half of this partnership. This is what he said:

"We feel the spectrum auction is a great opportunity to potentially gain significant resources that we can reinvest into programs and activities we provide to the community in support of our mission.”

So they will take the FCC money and reinvest it into something, since they have no other revenue source.

I would suspect KLCS is the one with more value in the auction, being above channel 37 (so it would have to be repacked if kept while KCET might be able to stay put) and KCET is co-channel to a station in Mexico while KLCS is not.

Channel sharing will no doubt be the way of the future for cash strapped, school-run NCEs.

But channel sharing also means that a station gives up control of its 6 MHz swatch of spectrum and all the things the station will be able to do with it in the future. I firmly believe that, with the rollout of ATSC 3.0, broadcasting a video stream (or multiple streams) will be a side business for broadcasters. The real money will be in leasing spectrum and offering other services. Can’t do that very easily when you’re tied to the hip with another station.
