On the Atlanta radio, it's an urban and crossover music listener's paradise. You have a full-service urban, 2 urban adult contemporary stations, 1 mainstream urban, and an urban contemporary gospel station. Also if you like crossover music there is Wild. It's an interesting and funny market for the nightlife crowd, and a disappointing one for the typical listeners found in most other radio markets...
Like I said a few weeks ago, Atlanta has become an incredibly stratified market. Urban formats go straight to the top of the ratings heap. The next tier of serious competition is the mainstream pop stations - Star 94, Q100, B98.5 and arguably The Fish. The rest are mostly fighting for Arbitron leftovers at this point.
There is no doubt about that.
It's kind of strange Atlanta has surpassed multi-ethnic Miami as the South's nightlife capital and home to the eclectic urban-crossover stations. 20 years ago, WEDR "99 Jamz" was like "V-103", an urban mystery on the radio dial with its full-service urban format that included soca and reggae music mixed into its typical R&B, hip-hop, and old school playlist. However, Cox killed that variety about 10 years ago.
