Help Me? What is a Radio Data System?

I hope I'm in the right board? Yesterday, I bought a "Sangean ATS 909 Radio with R.D.S. Radio Data System". I know that it is not an HD Radio but what exactly is a Radio Data System? Some of the stations display the station calls and ID at the bottom of the screen but there are a few(All Citadel and Entercom FM Stations and a few of Clear Channel and Bonneville) also display the name of the song and artist? When was this technology developed? Is this also the future of analog radio?

Radio Data System (RDS) has been around for quite a while. It uses a subcarrier on an analog FM signal to transmit low-speed data, like station information.

It was originally designed for "static" messages like the stations slogan and call letters, along with traffic or weather information.

Over the years, stations have found ways to tie their automation systems into it to show title and artist.

I wouldn't say it's the future. It's been like this for a while...radios that are RDS capable just aren't as widespread in the US as they are in other countries.

Here's some history:

This site also has some good technical discussions...
______________

You'll find that the stadard for RDS (at least in the US) just isn't there. I used to monkey with RDS like it was going out of style. I'd look at it on one radio, it would look great. I'd then look at it on another RDS radio and it would look horrible in regards to the formatting of the data stream.
______________

Yeah...it frustrates me as well. Some "scroll" the message smoothly, others chop them up into segments, and some don't show anything more than 8 characters!
______________
