FM Bandscan, Hogback Mountain WA (6789 feet) S of White Pass, 8/31/22

My longest day hike ever at 11 miles round-trip! Hiked from White Pass, up the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail), past Ginnette Lake, 100s of ripe wild blueberries, sweet as can be, and over 20 'thru-hikers' on their way to the Canadian border, 200 miles north of the trailhead. They are doing the entire 2,000 miles from Mexico to Canada. They sure have a LOT of determination. 'Wild' with Reese Witherspoon, I'm sure inspired many hikers. I met two from the Los Angeles area, and one young couple who flew from London to take on this life-changing adventure.
About 5 miles from the car was a scramble off-trail through trees, scree rock, and some wild blueberries, to the summit of Hogback Mountain, 6,789 feet above sea level and about 2,000 feet above the White Pass Ski Area. The PCT does not take thru-hikers to this mountain, so it is seldomly summited. Views included the Goat Rocks (and Curtis Gilbert Peak), Mt. Adams before it faded into clouds, a hazy Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainier, Rimrock Lake, and lots more. No Mt. Hood, blocked by the Goat Rocks. Interesting FM scan favoring central/eastern WA, Olympia, and (especially low-band), Astoria OR! Coordinates... 46.6N, -121.405W. It's about 1/2 mile from the Lewis County line.

Many pictures are coming soon.

Today I returned to the area, following the PCT below Hogback Mountain and up a saddle where I dropped to Shoe Lake. There were many new logs for this area, but none of them will count for the Yakima logbook because of the location in between Lewis and Yakima County. Some portions of my hike were 1/4 mile into Lewis County.
Today I saw at least 20 thru-hikers, including six who were from out of the country. A man from Canmore AB (near Edmonton), a group of three men/women from Switzerland, Australia and France, a woman hiking down to California who flew in from Finland, and a northbound thru-hiker from Italy. Plus I met some folks from Maryland and New Hampshire who were thru-hiking in the White Pass area. So much stamina and endurance to go this far. Good luck to them all! 🎉

Many of these logs were on western-facing slopes of the PCT and White Pass ski area where Yakima stations are weaker or blocked. These are just the new loggings for the area, no relogs except for those where I confirmed RDS for the 1st time.
88.1 CBU-2 Vancouver BC 97.6KW 203 mi
88.7 KAGU Spokane (no KDMB for some reason! 5KW 205 mi)
88.9 CBUX-FM1 Victoria BC 6.7KW 170 mi. It was while I was trying to get the ID recorded for CBUX-FM1, that I swung to the east and heard the Yakima translator for KOLU weakly. That was when I heard about the death of Bob Barker, from an SRN news update. I'll be writing some personal thoughts in the In Memorium section. A gloomy distraction to what was a beautiful hike.
89.5 KNHC Seattle 8.5KW 73 mi ID was recorded. It is so hard to defeat KSOH even at the edges of Yakima County.
89.9 KKJA Redmond relog, but confirmed "CSN" RDS. Also KQAC Portland, 5.9KW 98 mi, added to logbook.
90.1 KPLI Olympia 100W 77mi! w/ KNKX jazz programming. Also KBSG Raymond, // 90.5 KACS, 440W 112mi

Excellent work as always! I was just up at Paradise on Mount Rainer. I always regret not having the chance to grab a band scan up there, because there are so many interesting stations you can pull in. Unfortunately, as I was traveling with friends, I didn’t want to subject them to me messing with a radio for ten minutes… but I can confirm that I heard KHSS 100.7 up there. I was impressed that I caught it!

Great stuff, crain. Love your high altitude bandscans!

Nah, no pictures of PCT thru-hikers. But they all have feet of steel and it amazes me how they can just leave the Mexican border and hike for 5-6 months up to Canada. Especially those who travel 5000 miles by plane to San Diego and hike the PCT for months.
Wildlife seen...one hoary marmot whistling, at least 10 chipmunks, one sooty grouse, and a colony of four gray jays that were begging for handouts from PCT hikers. Was hoping to find elk or deer. Not this time.

My hike was a whopping 14 miles RT (a record), but at least I started early in the day. And the PCT in this area doesn't have a very steep grade to it.

Forgot to add two more logs. KCMS-105.3 Edmonds and CBU-105.7 Vancouver. Both on western-facing slopes.
