CHR Ratings as of March 2020

I notice across the country, CHR format ratings has gone down hill within the last few ratings books. The only market that CHR is doing well and it's only 1 station is WXKS Kiss 108 Boston in which it has an up trend. Is CHR struggling when it comes to music? Also, are we seeing a repeat of the early 90s' when CHR have an identity crisis?

Perhaps the virus has had an effect on music radio listening? Did you notice how news stations all increased in the ratings too?

T

I'll mention again that overall listening levels in the PPM markets is off by around 40% on average.

That means, for example, in LA that where in 25-54 there were an average of 400,000 people listening 6 AM to Midnight, Mon-Sun, in April there were 220,000. That is close to only half as many total listeners.

All stations lost. Some lost more than others.

You can't compare "share" when the Persons Using Radio is off by so much.

Great points by the OP that were proven out by the flip of Amp in Boston to Variety Hits.

IMO we are going to be seeing more flips in markets with multiple CHRs or Rhythmic CHRs in the coming weeks and months. Time won't wait.

Identity crisis nope people aren’t driving around as much don’t need to over analyse things.

I could be wrong, but CHR seems to have fewer new stars than it did in the 2010's. Maybe the only ones are the hip-hop artists.

No new Taylor Swifts, Katy Perrys, Taio Cruzs.

I agree...there hasn't been much new music or new musicians since COVID, and it's hurt radio ratings for some currents-based formats.

Studios were forced to shut down. The creative community is built around collaboration, and that's been hard to get done with a communicable disease.

It's not as big a problem in country, where the labels continue to churn out new artists and new releases. From what I can see, a lot of the work there has been done in home studios and using zoom technology.
