Boston Acoustics question

I'm planning on picking up a Boston Acoustics unit at Tweeter tomorrow to try it out and see what I get (If it sucks, I'm returning it)

I figured since I'm on the fringe of most of the area stations that I should use my external antennas.

I was just wondering the kind of connection it has so I'll know what adapter I need. Looks like RCA-Coaxial which I already have. Just want to know for sure so I don't have to go out again.
______________

You need a standard teeVee "F" connector.
The antenna jack on the radio is in a recessed place
and it's kinda tough to tighten the coax connector down,
so I suggest getting a cable or adapter to use a teeVee "push-on"
cable connector.
Let everyone here know how it works for you.

Yes, it does need good reception for the HD to come on.

You are correct it is a coaxial cable, like the back of a tv or vcr. I had a tough time using a screw on type cable fitting as they placed it right next to a plastic indentation. I went to my box of old cords and found one that slides on the fitting, I then used a threaded connector to connect to the cable coming from my antenna. Hope this makes sense.

Mr_Wizard we were replying at the very same time...2nd time this has happened to me since I've been visiting R-I. I think we said basically the same thing but yours is much clearer. Thanks.

Not a Tweeter around had one in stock over teh weekend, good luck!

Isn't that a speaker?

OK, I gotta ask...what the hell is a Tweeter? The only one I know produces high end for audio.

You picked a good time to get one...I just got PAD going on my two FM's so you can see title and artist while listening in HD. HD-2 isn't too far away, either.

IMHO, WMYX sounds excellent in HD...
______________

You should do fine with WKKV HD-1 and HD-2 as well as WMYX. WJMK comes in fairly good in K-town as well. Of course WWDV will be receivable. ;-)

AM wise you will do fine with WTMJ, WSCR, WGN, WBBM.

Don't expect to find one in the actual Tweeter store. I wanted to see for myself why some people on this board are so Pro-IBOC. I'm all for the sub channels and better sound quality, it's just the hash that wipes out adjacent stations that ruins it for me.

So I went to the store closest to me (Hanover, MA) one day to see if they had one. The person I talked to there seemed to know what he was talking about. He told me that they didn't have one there since they don't have room to display it (it's a small store). He did tell me that they had one on display at their larger (Braintree, MA) store about 10 miles away. So I decided to go up there to check it out. Well..... there wasn't one on display, and the person I asked had no idea what I was talking about. I had to myself show him on his computer on the tweeter website, what I was talking about.

So all of you that are hypeing HD, please tell me ONE store that I can go into in the MA/RI/NH area to hear it for myself, I am curious.

Got one!

Got one at Tweeter. Paid a nice $320 for it. They were selling it for $499 and I had to alert them that it was down to $299

Reception: Unless you live in the city, you're screwed unless you got a good antenna. Its a struggle for me, mostly because my external antenna isn't all that good and its a struggle with the coaxial cable screw situation.

Sound Quality: As an XM subscriber, on this reciever it is EXACT to XM. FM HD is nothing special. AM is a nice improvement.

Analog FM: Now analog FM is a different story. I am very pleased with the way this reciever picks up analog signals. It also does a great job at filtering bleed over from adjacents.

AM overall: You're going to want to use the external antenna.

Worth $300? No
Worth $200? No
Worth $150? No
Worth $100? Maybe

once I figure out how to get a steady signal (its not easy with the antenna I have since part of it is broke off) I'll post some sound samples.

HD stations recieved:

93.9 WLIT Chicago (For a split second) 60 Miles
96.9 WWDV Zion (Tower is in town. Consistant)
99.1 WMYX Milwaukee (3rd easiest) 30 Miles
100.3 WILV Chicago
100.7 WKKV Milwaukee (2nd easiest)
101.9 WTMX Chicago
103.5 WKSC Chicago
103.7 WXSS Milwaukee
104.3 WJMK Chicago (Amazingly, one of the easiest)
105.1 WOJO Chicago

AM

670 WSCR Chicago

You have to struggle to get all but WWDV.
______________

Well I guess the Tweeter stores in WI have better selection than the ones here in MA, unless they've started stocking them within the past couple weeks

You couldnt get WTMJ, WGN and WBBM on am??

I dont know what WJMK is doing but their signal is quite good considering that they put out all of 41 watts, yes that right FOURTY ONE WATTS on digital.

Glad you coudl get WKKV in HD. I am howvere having soem trouble with the signal right now. I will have it better tomorrow.

FWIW, the analog only BA Receptor is a really nice FM radio. It is quite good at rejecting adjacent channel interference and has a very pleasant over-all sound. The AM isn't as good as the FM, but it's better than most, especially with an external antenna.

For those of us who like knobs, it is very straight forward to use. On-off buton, a rotary volume control and a tuning knob. No menus or multi-purpose soft buttons.

It's about $150 at Best Buy. I'm told by Best Buy sales people that most people think that is too expensive.

Something is wrong with the AM side of the unit. It was working fine at the beginning then it suddenly stopped. I tried an external antenna for AM and that didn't seem to help. Just dead silence. Not even any static.

As for WJMK, they put out 41 watts at a pretty nice height (Sears Tower) which is probably the reason I can get it.
______________
