AMBER ALERT WEDNESDAY AT 2PM

A

I'm curious as to the origination of "Amber Alerts" done through the EAS activation. I heard one at 2pm today on The Ticket and it was obviously not from anyone on thier staff.
Whoever did this particular broadcast should be ashamed! They stumbled over every sentence they spoke. The alert was clearly being ad-libbed and obviously not read from written copy. The announcer ended by saying "the suspect is allegedly married to one of the victims, a 37 year old woman and 14 year old boy. (Now that would be interesting, wouldn't it?!)
I'm curious who the announcer for that Amber Alert was. Surely they know they are being heard on virtually every radio station in this region when they do one of those. One would THINK they'd have the presence of mind to write their copy and not try to wing it with something as high profile and important as that.
Awful, Dreadful, utterly un-professional. Whoever that was does NOT belong behind any microphone in a broadcast facility and should seriously reconsider their choice of career. <P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by abcdj on 09/28/05 10:44 PM.</FONT></P>

I heard it too but on TBS or some other weird crap I watch during the day. It almost sounded as if they said "QUICK, someone get on the air with this!", and threw the person on, rip and read style. Who knows what the circumstances were but yeah, they guy sounded like he was totally cluless about ALL the infomation. And I caught the "married to one of the victims" I thought, WHAT?! <P ID="signature">______________

AMBER alerts for DFW originate from WBAP. The alert comes over a fax ,the board op alerts the news room. and calls the police agency to confirm. He(boardop) sets up the tones, counties, etc on the activation machine, signals the newsperson they reads it, and the message is sent out to all stations within the EAS area of DFW. So blame the newsperson on duty at WBAP.

Sounds as if the news staff was on a late lunch break and the janitor was conscripted to read the alert. Unknown what circumstances contributed to the lax delivery of the alert, but it DOES appear that there would be a suitable voice SOMEWHERE in a radio station. No, wait. Given the budget situation these days perhaps a suitable voice is the last commodity to be found in a station. Perhaps someone at Walgreen's could fill in.

Well that must be true, because BAP is always the first one to spread the news. That also must be true because KRLD NEVER re-broadcasts that. EVERY OTHER STATION DOES, but KRLD never does. I always wondered why, but thanks to the great Murrow, I now know. Thanks.

But I must say that whoever that voice is... I didn't hear the alert at 2pm... but for the rest of the night, he did pretty well covering the storms AND the amber alerts. He does very well, actually, for covering two Breaking News events at once. Props to the Big BAP on that.

It probably wasnt him at lunch though. I wasnt listening.

i agree. it was me. i thought the abduction had just taken place, around noon wednesday. so, i thought the best thing to do was to go on asap, around 1:30, because time is of the essence. i thought i could ad lib it, but i was wrong. i was embarrassed after having stumbled through it, especially when i found out the abduction had taken place around noon tuesday. doh! it was stupid of me, and it's not station policy. -scott

Body Found In Lancaster; Amber Alert Canceled

POSTED: 4:12 pm CDT September 28, 2005
UPDATED: 11:29 pm CDT September 28, 2005

LANCASTER, Texas -- Lancaster police issued an Amber Alert Wednesday for a teenage boy and his mother who were likely taken hostage against their will.

Police told NBC 5 that Brian Montez Booker, 37, abducted his wife, Yolanda Booker, also 37, at her workplace just before noon on Tuesday.

Brian Booker then drove to Lancaster Junior High School and checked out Joshua Henry, Yolanda Booker's 14-year-old son, NBC 5 reported.

Later in the day, the suspect called his brother from Lufkin, Texas, and said he would kill both victims, NBC 5 reported.

Lancaster police said the body of a young man was found at about 6 p.m. Wednesday in a wooded area in the 2600 block of West Main Street in Lancaster, about a mile from the school where the teen was last seen, NBC 5's Susan Risdon reported. Police called off the Amber Alert for Henry Wednesday evening.

In a news conference Wednesday night, Lancaster police said the medical examiner has not yet determined the cause of death or the body's identity.

"Officers from the Lancaster ISD Police Department were walking that roadway, since it was not that far from the school, just to be sure, and they were the ones that found the body," said Lt. Joe Hall, of the Lancaster police.

The Bookers was still missing Wednesday evening.

The station also reported that Yolanda Booker called a co-worker and told that person that she didn't know where she was.

None of the parties reportedly have cell phones with them.

Family members gathered at the missing woman's apartment Wednesday to comfort each other, fearing the worst outcome about Henry's life. Relatives believe Brian and Yolanda Booker are in Denver.

"They've spotted him in Denver, with somebody he knew up in Denver, but as far as my nephew, we haven't heard from him in two days. My concern is about him right now, because I know she is still living," said Alphonso Brice, a family member.

Police have issued the following vehicle description:
1997 four-door Toyota Avalon XL
White, with gold trim and silver rims
License plate: Colorado 456BZO

We started a great thing here in Texas with this Amber Alert. With all of our technology, you'd think we could get this right. It should be part of Homeland Security. Maybe then it could be funded and staffed properly. It's never the same on all stations when it runs and its never the same on the same station twice.

Scott,

Mistakes happen. I wouldn't get too worried about what the people on here say. I hear you all the time. You're a damn good talent.

Ideally, under Homeland Security it would work, but Homeland Security is least likely the best way to manage Amber Alerts. Every other program has been put under the HS umbrella, meaning the Amber Alert program would receive twice the funding but none of it would ever reach the operational level and there would be 20 bureaucrats (few of whom having a clue) sitting around "discussing and reviewing" how best to issue an Amber Alert. HS is a top down operation which, while well meaning, just doesn't function efficiently at all. Bottom line, it would reshape the Amber Alert system to distribution of alerts via a tin can and a string with messages going out only after they were sent through four levels of paperwork and approval granted following six weeks of red tape.

Homeland security??? It's a joke ,right? Considering they have done such a great Job in New Orleans and are bungling Port Arthur,Beaumnont. It's okay as it is . Scott admitted his mistake. He learned from it.He took responsibility, unlike Homeland Security staff.

BROWNIE ... not the junior Girl Scout types

Scott,

You are one of the best and most trusted news-voices in the area. You are entitled to a mistake every once in a while. I have a feeling that had everyone on this board known it was you, and not just some guy they threw in front of the mic, they would not have been so harsh. What I mean is... you deserve respect, and you're not getting it. But we still respect you.

Do you know who is that voice who always does the weather alerts. Its the alert that airs on every station in DFW (excpet KRLD) and its always the same vioce. Who is that? Whoever it is, he is great. Especially because he covered the Storms and the AmberAlert on the same night.

Well, welcome to the fun, but sometimes brutal, Dallas board. We hope to hear from you alot!

CTL

I guess the lesson is this:
Don't ever put yourself out there without a rope!
Your reputation is on the line every time you open that microphone and you never know who might be listening.
