Additional KMXA STA filing

In December, 1090 KMXA Aurora, source of the mysterious tone heard in multiple states for several weeks toward the end of 2023, filed an STA request to operate at 125 watts at night (25% of licensed nighttime power) using its daytime pattern. KMXA cited failure of an antenna tuning unit and subsequent effects on other parts of the nighttime array. The FCC was keeping the request in pending status. KMXA has filed an amendment to the request to operate on a nondirectional basis at night. No reason for the change was given, but I have noticed significant audio distortion with the current nighttime operation.

The distortion may be transmitter related.. when i was in laramie, KHAT 1210 would have issues at high power that it didnt have at night power and the way it was explained to me with their transmitter is that something about high voltage and heat or something.. contributed to something else down the line.. this is the opposite, so maybe theyre running a transmitter below what it normally can run and theyve added some resistors, etc

Today, the KMXA daytime signal sounds distorted as well. But it's also about 20 dB down from usual daytime strength - normally, it's as strong in the daytime here as KOA - so possibly it's on night power or in some in-between state.
