Right now, Edmonton's 91-7 The Bounce is a CHR-pop station. Here's the R&R panel for it.

5 20 Cory Lee Goodbye (Hipjoint) 06/12/2005
3 20 D.H.T. Listen To Your Heart (Robbins) 06/12/2005
24 19 Bobby Valentino Slow Down (DTP/Def Jam/IDJMG) ----
19 17 Jelleestone Hip Hop Song (Universal Music Canada) ----
21 15 Amerie One Thing (Columbia) 04/10/2005
1 14 John Legend Number One (Columbia) 06/12/2005

No urban-only tracks, with the exception of Jelleestone. I know they've been playin' Caesars' Jerk It Out, which is a rock song. Expect 96X to go hot AC sooner or later, so The Bounce could be a rhythmic-leaning CHR-pop (like Wild 101, or what The Beat 94.5's old incarnation was when they became a rhythmic-leaning CHR-pop by September '04). At least Canada's only got 2 commercial all-hiphop stations, which are Flow 93-5 in T-Dot (urban) & 91-5 The Beat in Kitchener (CHR-rhythmic). Wild 101 (CKEY-FM) Fort Erie/Buffalo exited the hiphop arena already. 91-5 The Beat plays much more urban-charted hiphop than any other Canadian hiphop station.

Huh? Exactly how do you define urban music? Snoop and Gin & Juice or sumthing man? The better part of that playlist is "urban" music. Much of it R&B, but that's still urban music. Perhaps you should have better said "Bounce is not a RAP station"

This station has Rythmic CHR all over it. It's more Rythmic than Vibe in Calgary.

Does this mean BLK and JLB in D-town are "pop" with a rythmic lean ?

Right now, Edmonton's 91-7 The Bounce is a CHR-pop station.

Well, it wouldn't surprise me if the Bounce is leaning to CHR because their current format doesn't seem all that viable in that market.

A rhythmic CHR would work just fine in Edmonton. An urban station would not, but that's a given anywhere in Canada outside of Toronto.

Edmonton is a tight market, alot of radio there for a city with less than 1 million people. You've got UrbanCHR, PopCHR, Active Rock, New Rock, Classic Rock, etc. The city is saturated with radio.

Few years back, Power 92 (as a CHR-POP) had a commanding lead in the market, just as sister Power 107 did in Calgary. Edmonton is a fairly wealthy city, good job market, large number of young people.

Edmonton (market #6) is missing a hot AC. Calgary (market #5) became the largest market without a hot AC ever since CKZZ-FM 95.3 Vancouver shifted from CHR-pop to hot AC by March '04, as well as when Corus's The Peak 107.3 signed off and became classic rock Q107 by Feburary 19, '04. There isn't an active rocker in Edmonton, just like most Canadian cities. 100.3 The Bear is mainstream rock. 91-7 The Bounce is a rhythmic hit station, not a CHR-rhythmic station. Rhythmic hit & CHR-rhythmic are different. Rhythmic hit means softer hiphop mixed with pop & dance, CHR-rhythmic is just all-hiphop. Believe me, if 96X flipped back to hot AC after a 2-year hiatus, then 91-7 The Bounce could add more pop & rock to its playlist, and sound like a rhythmic-leaning CHR-pop, like 102.7 KIIS-FM in LAX, Q102 in Philly, Hot 99-5 in Washington or Channel 955 in Detroit. Even Kitchener still needs its only hiphop station (91-5 The Beat), as they've got a tight playlist for hiphop, all 'cuz of Z103dot5 being the only CHR-pop in those areas (Toronto, Kitchener, Hamilton, Barrie, etc.). 91-5 The Beat in Kitchener still works as a CHR-rhythmic station. Leave it alone. Kitchener's fulla rimshot stations that come in loud & clear there, with fewer local stations.
Edited by PassDutch on 06/21/05 01:40 AM.

Z103(CIDC FM) is not a CHR pop, it is CHR dance.
______________

OK, CHR = Contemporary Hit Radio, so a CHR Rythmic is a Rhythmic Contemporary Hit Radio. But wait, The Bounce is a Rhthymic Hit Station. So exactly what is the difference again ? There is no difference, and it's not about to move to Pop. People seem to have this opinion of Edmonton without ever having gone or LIVED there.

As for the Beat, it's not a secret that Z103.5 beats them in the 18-34 demo. I'm not saying anything you can't read. When Energy Radio and Z103.5 dominated in the Kdub, they had a combined 12share at times. The Beat has a 5.

Hiphop is not it anymore. It's not the music it was, and it's fading from the limelight. Rap music stations, outside of Flow 93.5, do not work in Canada. but then Edmonton, Kdub, Van, or even Calgary don't have 25% "black" people.

Corus flipped Peak to Classic Rock because the ratings were in the dumpster.

For the record slick. I lived and or worked in both cities. I live in Kitchener about 4 blocks from the Beat. I hear it all the time.

Even Kitchener still needs its only hiphop station (91-5

Active Rock vs Mainstream Rock

What's the diffie? The Bear plays new "rock" music, peppered with older big classics. Sounds much like CJAY 92 in Calgary (but hey, same owners).

Give The Bounce some time. Vibe FM didn't pull out of the gatehouse at Warp 9 either.

I know it's a dance station, but they mix some CHR-pop with a rhythmic lean, BTW.

Active rock -- New hard rock (which includes nu metal) mixed with heavy metal, and metal classics.
Mainstream rock -- New hard rock mixed with heavy metal, and mixed with all the classics from classic rock.

Re: Active Rock vs Mainstream Rock

WRIF is active rock, it plays classic rock too. BEAR can crank out "nu metal, nu rock and classic rock". Me thinks you're too into splitting hairs on musical styles. Active rock is the generic term for rock radio that plays a mix of new rock music with classics.

No offense man, but not that many people are interested in listening to Nu Metal anyway.

There's gotta be a harder lean for it to be active Rock. Otherwise it's just 'rock' or 'mainstream rock'.

I would be surprised if CHUM/Milestone programmed a rhythmic CHR without going more mainstream or adding mainstream hits. Look at 94-5 The Beat, Vibe 98-5 and Hot 89-9. They were rhythmic at first, doing about a three share, they worked in some more mainstream hits as time progressed and are now doing around five shares.

But then again Milestone is the majority owner in this joint venture[and CHUM does have a deal that gives them the option to sell their stake to Milestone], so that may work in their favor in keeping 91.7 within the Rhythmic borders.

I lived in Calgary when Vibe came on the air. It came out of the gatehouse as a pure rap station. There wasn't a sniff of mainstream pop music on the station, you'd heard that on Kiss 96.9. Bounce is a touch different, and reasonbly close to what Vibe is doing today. Vibe is now one of Canada's premier CHR's (least in my opinion). Nice to see them in Calgary, there was a time where you couldn't hear the biggest pop artists on local radio in Cowtown.

CHUM's the majority (51%)

97seven HTZ FM (CHTZ St Catherines) was intended to be the Ultimate Active Rocker, but they watered it down.
______________
