Univision Deportes Radio Officially Debuts on 105.1 KHOV-FM

Univision Deportes Radio officially launched yesterday in 10 major US radio markets including KHOV 105.1 FM here in Phoenix. The network is airing on 1280 WADO-AM New York, 1020 KTNQ-AM Los Angeles, 1200 WRTO-AM Chicago, 1270 KFLC-AM Dallas, 1010 KLAT-AM Houston, 1140 WQBA-AM Miami, 105.1 KHOV-FM Phoenix, 870 KLSQ-AM Las Vegas, 1350 KCOR-AM San Antonio, and 1530 KGBT-AM McAllen TX.

Looks like Univision Deportes Radio will try to heavily compete with ESPN Deportes Radio. The network is going to focus a lot on sports, specifically soccer featuring teams from LigaMX, CopaMX, the U.S. National teams, MLS and Liga Portugal. Univision Deportes Radio will also use their affiliates local radio assets and partnerships to air a varied line-up of local market games from other major league sports teams. Local market contests will feature: MLB / Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, New York Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks and the Texas Rangers; NBA / Chicago Bulls, Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks; MLS / FC Dallas, Houston Dynamo, Chicago Fire; NFL / Chicago Bears and Arizona Cardinals; and NHL/ Chicago Blackhawks.

Interesting that Phoenix is the only market in the initial roll-out that will be utilizing an FM signal. Also, besides Chicago, it appears the Phoenix affiliate of Univision Deportes Radio has the Spanish language play-by-play rights for all the local major sports teams (sorry Coyotes).

We'll see how they do in the crowded Spanish language radio market. I wish them well!

They've definitely put KBMB in peril. They also stole the Dbacks and Suns from KSUN, which will be affected.

I'd wonder if they will make a play to get the expansion Vegas Golden Knights in Spanish for KLSQ, but apparently they went with Lotus Broadcasting which also owns a Regional Mexican station.

Unless Univision have something up their sleeve to improve their East Valley coverage, 710 still has the daytime signal advantage.
 
YIKES! Yet another Sports Parking Lot in the Valley, or in this case, a estacionamiento deportes. And what a marginal signal, even with a booster at 105~Three that can't go further east because KFNN's translator is on the same frequency. YIKES, otra vez! Shirley, Univision must be contemplating simulcasts with their other stations to provide better market coverage.

Agreed, the 105.1 KHOV-FM signal does have problems out in the East Valley. It's there, but it does not come in all that well.

As far as 105.3 KHOV-1-FM is concerned, that station doesn't come in at all anywhere of note in the valley thanks to the KFNN translator, 105.3 K287BX-FM. Transmitting from a place called "Constellation, Arizona" (never heard of it before) is not good considering the KFNN translator, 105.3 K287BX-FM, is broadcasting from Shaw Butte, a nice central location just north of uptown Phoenix. At this point, 105.3 KHOV-1-FM is better off finding a new frequency because KFNN has blasted them out of Phoenix!

Not to go off on a tangent, but bravo to the FCC for having two signals fighting each other out on the same frequency. Listeners in Phoenix have the same problem with 96.1 FM (hip hop versus a religious station), 102.9 FM (three signals here with a poor LP-FM station fighting it out with an English religious station and a Spanish religious station), 91.1 FM (Spanish Christian vs. "K-Rocky") and 97.3 FM (the same owner interfering with his own station). I apologize if I missed any, but this is starting to get ridiculous!
 
With Univision's clout, I wonder if they are going to try and get the rights to the Marlins when WAQI's deal is up? If WQBA were to get them, would the signal reach Cuba without the government squelching it with their own programming on 1140?
