Lotus Communications Corp. has closed on its previously announced acquisition of 5kW KFWB-AM (980)/Los Angeles from Universal Media Access KFWB-AM LLC for $11.2 million. Lotus is a California-based company headed by President/CEO Howard Kalmenson, and First Senior VP Jim Kalmenson, while UMA is a Delaware LLC company. Lotus also owns radio stations in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Tucson, Fresno, Bakersfield, Reno and Sacramento, along with two television stations in Houston and Phoenix. Kalil & Co. brokered the transaction.

Power alone is not the full basis for valuing a station. Directionality, transmitter location, ground conductivity and dial position are just as important.

KFWB is 5 kw non-directional on a frequency that is in the lower part of the band. The 5 mV/m signal covers essentially all the Hispanic market (it only misses lower OC and the High Desert). The site is in a nice, relatively central location for population coverage. It is probably the 4th best AM signal in the market, after KFI, KNX and KLAC.

Lotus is debt-free and a very smart operator.

Have 'em do a debt free scream on Dave Ramsey :)) Even though Lotus paid a premium for 9~Eighty, it's got a good dial position and great coverage for 5kw.
