KNAI-AM 8~Sixty buys K270BZ 101~Nine from Riviera. Now the Cesar Chavez Foundation can legally air commercials on both their newly acquired AM and soon to be acquired FM. So What in the Wide, Wide World of Sports is a goin' on here? CCF has been running commercials for decades on non-commercial 88~Three (a frequency they share with KPHF). What's the motivation to get clean with an Ancient Modulation station and a rather directional translator? Sounds like more of a simulcast of all three stations, than a new direction for Radio Campesina. Can someone translate all of this for the Nurse & me - well beyond our pay grade!

They're going to have to figure out how to reduce interference to KQSS, first off.

Now that agribusiness has learned that filing petitions with the FCC results in billable hours for CCF lawyers, it's pretty clear the plan is to sell their non comm licenses and play in the commercial band where they can run layaway spots without complaint. If you can't get one of the rimshots for the price you want, then an old sports parking lot and a translator is the next best thing.

Phoenix & Visalia are the only markets with Campesina on non-comm FMs...and we know what happened to CCF in Visalia! Still, 88~Three is ten times better than 8~Sixty with that highly directional translator they're buying from Riviera. Los Buckeye Boyz think CCF is up to something and the two recent acquisitions are not part of the long term plan for Phoenix. But then again, we thought Phil Gordon was really Janet Napolitano with a darker 5 o'clock shadow!

Watch them flip this to EMF.

I'm a little confused myself at Gerawan Farming being the one filing to gum up the works in Visalia. Do they just hate CCF so much they're willing to get involved with the radio acquisitions out of spite?

Labor dispute between the two parties. Gerawan Farming is non union, UFW is. While the filing before the FCC may be seen as a tactic, fact remains that Campesina has been running non-comms as commercial FMs. CCF got nailed in Visalia, but continues to operate commercially on non-comm 88~Three in Phoenix. Just have a hard time believing they'll be happy with 8~Sixty and a translator. 88~Three has strong Valley coverage from Shaw Butte.

For whatever it's worth (and you know me, that's not much), the application states that the translator will carry 860.

Sounds like CCF wants to get out of the NCE band pronto.

But that pattern is going to need some tweaking

Good grief, that is pretty petty of Gerawan.

Could stand some twerking as well! Let's face it, Radio Campesina on 88~Three attracts big shares - and they won't come anywhere close to those shares on Ancient Modulation and a translator that misses more than it covers. The Nurse and I think the solution lies with EMF swapping KLVA Avondale (modification filed) for CCF's half interest in 88~Three. The other half (KPHF) comes in an agreement to swap for CCF's 8~Sixty and 101~Nine. Upshot - EMF gets a non-comm FM, CCF gets a commercial FM they don't have to share, and Family stations gets full-time coverage with CCF's newly acquired AM/FM combo.

The filing against one of the UFW's stations by Gerawan apparently came out of a variety of labor negotiations in which each side attacked everything possible about the other. At some point, Gerawan found that a non-com was being used commercially and added that condition to their allegations of impropriety by the UFW. The filings make very interesting reading.

This is exactly what should happen.

Family Radio currently depends on a puny translator and KPHF to provide service to Phoenix. K270BZ, even at reduced power, is a massive improvement over that for daytime FR service, and the AM is the icing on the cake to feed it.

CCF has a ratings success with its half-an-FM but needs to go commercial for its own sanity and to avoid FCC fines.

EMF will always make a deal, and KLVK makes up for any losses from ditching KLVA. In fact, the two are pretty redundant. By buying KNAI and KPHF, surrendering one of the licenses to allow for continuous operation on 88.3, I could see 88.3 flip to Air 1 which has pieced-together coverage, and soon, barely-rimshotting KKMR, perhaps with KZAI going to K-Love.

Ron Cohen should have gone after that 101.9 translator. The way things are set up for KQFN right now is that East Valley coverage is still poor with their current "two translators on 99.3" setup. It was much better when they were on 99.5, even with the interference from Tucson and Wittman while driving.

Not sure CRC would have ponied up $1.1m for that translator!

KIIM and KRPH fight enough of a war on that frequency that neither is reliably enjoyable. The same is true of the 102.9 translators by me. You never know what language you'll hear on 102.9 at any given time.
