Who are these ppl calling in testimonials in commercials?

I have no problem buying products or services promoted on radio, on their merits rather than the hosts' "personal" endorsements or the actors phoning in their phoney endorsements

That's you. You are one person. Advertisers want to reach millions. They are pretty sure their approach of using endorsements will appeal to a large number of people in the target age group. They're paying for access to that audience base, and you're in that base. Advertising in general is a percentage business. You never achieve 100% success, but you hope your pitch will be successful often enough to make the ad worthwhile. Otherwise, they won't do it.

What do you consider 'highly rated', Big A? Would a Top 5 station in a Top 15 market meet that definition?

Depends on the format and demographics. I was thinking either Z-100 or even WLTW. Specifically a music station targeting 25 to 54.

Even with all the success that classic hits has in ratings, it's starting to get some testimonial advertising.

Local host promoting a local business is a different animal than a national host promoting magic pills. That being said, Paul Harvey was said to have never endorsed something he didn't use or couldn't personally recommend.
