40 years at the ROQ Rodney steps down

Rodney Bingenheimer is set to call it a day after 40 years at KROQ this week. Its the end of an era for the former honorary Mayor of West Hollywood, that was him right? Rodney was so instrumental in the New Wave & Punk scene, the truly sad thing is I remember his early shows like it was yesterday. We wish Rodney the best!

The Orange County Register had a nice writeup about Rodney's history:

http://www.ocregister.com/2017/05/2...enheimer-talks-about-being-taken-off-the-air/

The reason for his departure was explained to Rodney in a meeting with station management:
“They said they were going through a lot of changes, a lot of cutbacks, and they’ve got new management people coming in,” Bingenheimer said.
“I didn’t leave the show on my own, but they were very good to me the whole time I was there.”

His last show will air on Monday morning June 5, 2017 from Midnight - 3 AM PT.

What happened to Radio Discussions since this morning. My screen has changed and the name of this forum is VBulletin, I don't think so. In any case I always enjoyed the Young Marquis and Stanley before or after Rodney!

Well written article, thanks for sharing!

Maybe alt 98.7 will pick up rodney on the rock

I wouldn't if I was them. Nothing against Rodney, he is something of a legend in this town and his presence has always given KROQ cache (now known as "street cred" for you young'ns), but he is inextricably tied to the LA music scene of the 70's and 80s. Not that he hasn't brought other bands to our attention since then, of course he has, but the key word in Alt 98.7. is "Alt". Of course, they are implicitly saying that they are the alternative to KROQ. The challenger to KROQ that everyone but KROQ wants to them to have. Bringing in Rodney would be the equivalent of saying "we want to someday be KROQ, and we're not there yet, but hey Rodney is in the house!".

Besides the average 25 year old who listens to both KROQ and Alt 98.7 has no idea who Rodney is, and why should they?

40 years..WOW!.Where have all the years gone. I turned 20 when Rodney on the Rock was first broadcast on KROQ. It was must listen radio back then.Got a feeling most of his audience has like me moved on. How many 60 year olds are listening to KROQ at midnight.I was suprised to hear he is still on What about a SIRUS show on the weekend at a earlier hr.

I know they didn't let him go because of money. Rodney, from what I heard, was paid peanuts if anything. He worked for the love of it.

I sense some deep shifts at KROQ that may spell the end of the station. Rodney may be the first to leave the sinking ship. Enter the sand man, enter the reaper, entercom.

My understanding is the opposite... he was on the payroll with a rather significant stipend that was not proportional to the hours put in or the daypart the show ran in.

Is anyone recording tonight's show? I'm not set up to do so but would love to have it archived.

I wouldn't be surprised if Rodney shows up on KCSN. Jed the Fish and Julie Slater have shows there.

I can totally relate. Living in North Orange County at the time, we literally had to drive to the top of a nearby hill (with beer and other vital substances, of course) to hear the latest sounds from Rodney on the Roq. Jim Ladd may have been the one to make me wish I could be on the radio, but those early days of KROQ made me believe it was possible. Thank you Rodney for your tireless pursuit of the latest and coolest tunes to share with your legion of fans, of which I am happy to be included. Looking forward to seeing what's next. Congrats on a great run!

I thought that 98.7 was implying that they play alternative music. Something KROQ used to do back in the 90's. I would say 98.7 is more like KROQ used to be. Honestly, KROQ is more like kiss fm and amp with a touch of 98.7. What made KROQ great to listen to was that you couldn't hear that music on any other radio station. Now it seems like everyone plays any and everything
