97 Rock: How DARE you mock Polish people?!

Quote from the article --
"The programming on 97 Rock was highly offensive, unacceptable and
Intolerable." Some might say that comment also applies to the
regular daily programming on that station.

I wonder if some of the offended Polish listeners are
Carl Paladino supporters/friends. Bigots on school boards are
possibly worse than the hacks on 97 Rock...

Quite honestly, considering Eddy D's history with loose lips and making an idiot of himself, he's the LAST person who should be pitching a fit over ANYONE else's speech.

The last time he acted like a jerk in public(on Twitter, specifically), it cost him two jobs(a co-hosting gig for WBBZ-TV's Off Beat Cinema and some stringer work for WKBW-TV(7 Eyewitness News)).

What many DO NOT UNDERSTAND, is that inviting people to tell the infamous "Polish joke" en masse, is a way of making fun of the Polish joke thing. It's basking in it, demonstrating that Poles are certainly tough enough to confront such silliness and even laugh at it.

Of course since most lack any sense of nuance, they just took it as an insult.

Way to be bigger than that :/

That's the most outside promotion that the 97-Rock morning show has gotten in a long time. Let's see, when is the next ethnic holiday?

"To any and all that were offended." Tepid. That's the way it works these days. "Sorry IF we offended you." There was a time when companies would offer a wholly inclusive apology, "we apologize for our boorish behavior and offending our listeners." Now it's "to any and all." Like, "34 listeners were offended, everybody else thought it was a laugh riot." Maybe 97 Rock will do Italian jokes on Columbus Day next year. How would half their staff feel about that?

...no other group owner wants to throw away money chasing after a dinosaur demo.

Not quite.

Fall book shows them 4th overall, and 5th in both 25-54 and 18-49. It's 6th in 18-34 and 5th in 18-24. Sure, it is best in 45-64 but in a market where less than a quarter of revenue is national, the older demos are not the bid disadvantage they would be in a somewhat larger market.

But what company in their right mind is going to throw money at trying to get 45-64 numbers? That's why the station has no competition and won't in the future.

They get good 35-54 numbers... it flip-flops between 4th and 5th in that demo.

And the format is an option in markets that are not agency driven. The recent thread with Buddy Shula about the sales success of WBEN... which leans much older... showed us that in markets of this size direct accounts very much like 35-54 or 35-64. Direct accounts have a habit of being easier to sell if a station talks to their generation and if their customers are generally over 30 anyway.

While no other company will go at the exact format, there can certainly be other stations that target the upper end of the demos that local accounts will buy.
