Oldies K-Surf Debuts on KKGO-FM 105.1 HD2

Saul has changed formats on 1260 and his HD subchannels quite often. I hope he sticks with KSURF. Nobody is playing 50s and 60s anymore and I'm sure there a lot of former KRTH listeners that are embracing the new format. Nice to have oldies on HD2 and standards on HD3..now that's putting the subchannels to good use!

There are at least two online streams for 50's and 60's music (both popular and Country):

These two have very similar playlists and almost identical formats.
 
Every link online I could find was playing classical and labeled as K-Mozart.

They are owned by the same person and the play lists are the same. The only difference is Wkce has a morning show from 8 am to 10 am and WPLB has a noon to 1 pm show. Both shows are done by Roger Morgan and he takes requests and answers the phone himself. Most of what he plays is from his own personal record library. The same format is also on WFAT but they do not own the station. They also own another station in Vermont that plays country music.
 
Per today's Hear Ache on laradio.com, the oldies format is now full-time on 1260 AM. DJ's coming soon.

There's even a French (Malagasy, actually) band called "Les Surfs" that was popular in France...I heard a couple of their songs on the radio while in France in 2001. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_Surfs

Maybe they can hire the talent let go from that other station of late. Shotgun Tom, Jim Carson and others would fit in perfectly here.

That would be great if they could afford them. This is a small AM station. Their FM country station has been letting air talent go for years. This station will be making less money than that one.

They had a monster hit all across Latin America in "Ahora te puedes marchar" which was a cover of Dusty Springfield's "I Only Want to be with You". They had a number of other hits in that region as well and recorded them for the Spanish mega-label, Hispavox.

You found my favorite station... very well done. And I love their 60's French oldies channel online where they play all the greats like Franciose Hardy, Johnny Halliday, France Gall, Sylvie Vartan, Marie Laforêt, Gilbert Becaud, Joe Dassin, Adamo and lots of others.

Yes. The AM is very limited in signal coverage, and which nobody will listen to for music. The FM is an HD subchannel with good coverage, but it is HD. I don't see how the can afford to put big name talent on there unless they pay a small stipend for weekly voice tracking.

I hadn't seen any commitment to local talent. There are several well known syndicated services that would love an LA clear.
 
Shotgun and Jim Carson would sound great playing real oldies. I'm sure they would want more than Saul is willing to pay,but even Voice tracked they would sound better than what is on 101,but KRTH is targeting people in their 40s,so its really an apples to oranges comparison. Still,it is nice that Saul would put a 50s 60s format on the air. Let's hope this will be a keeper!
 
That's why the classical format was moved to KKJZ 88.1 HD2

This '50s/'60s oldies format launched yesterday (March 11) on KKGO-FM HD2. For those of us who don't have HD Radios (myself included), this is simulcast on KBOQ-AM 1260 on weekends (from 5:00 PM Friday to 9:00 AM Monday). As most Angelenos on here may remember, this isn't the first time that music from the '50s and '60s has been heard on the 1260 AM frequency in L.A. Some here may recall that as KGIL, using the "Retro 1260" moniker, the station played a mix of standards and oldies; and for a time under that moniker they had oldies weekends. And from August 2004 to June 2005, they were all oldies every day, with the call letters KSUR. At that time, they simulcasted on Tijuana-licensed XESURF-AM 540, by which time they were "Oldies 540 and 1260," later listing the higher frequency before the lower frequency in their moniker. The Tijuana station still has the XESURF call sign as a Spanish-language Christian station.

That's great news for us who have HD Radio in the car and now my home. I listen to 88.1 KKJZ HD1 for jazz and Long Beach State Student station 88.1 HD3 for new Alt-Rock (like KCRW HD2), and I was hoping K-Beach 88.1 HD3 would move to HD2 - but, it looks like that's not happening. Thanks for the info, I'll check it out on my Sangean HDR-18 HD Table Radio!!! Joe
