Disney's 'Beauty and the Beast' gets age restriction in Russia over gay character

No political comments please.

Disney’s live-action remake “Beauty and the Beast” will receive an age restriction in Russia after director Bill Condon revealed an “exclusively gay moment” in the film.

According to Russian film service Kinopoisk, people under the age of 16 will not be able to go see the movie in theaters without being accompanied by an adult.

This comes three days after Vitaly Milonov, an MP of the United Russia party, asked the country’s culture minister to screen the film prior to its March 16 Russian release and to “take measures to totally ban” it if the film contains “elements of propaganda of homosexuality.”

A Russian law enacted in 2013 prohibits the spread of “gay propaganda” to minors.

An Alabama movie theater also decided to pull its scheduled screenings of the film because of its inclusion of a “homosexual character.”

Funny thing is that no one under 16 can go watch the movie without a parent.

Who would go watch a kid movie that's over 16? And what movie can someone at the targeted age go alone? I mean children probably 12 and younger would want to see it. But not many older than 12 year olds.

I intend to see it, and I am over 12.

As a sidebar, the ability to create illusion and fantasy is part of doing good "theater of the mind" radio.

‘Beauty and the Beast’ Pulled From Release in Malaysia After ‘Gay Moment’ Is Cut

Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” has been pulled from release in Malaysia, even though the country’s official censors approved the release after cutting a well-publicized “gay moment” from the film.

The live-action remake of the animated classic was originally scheduled for release in Malaysia on Thursday. But the film has vanished from local movie listings, and theater chain Golden Screen Cinemas said on its website that the film “has been postponed by Disney until further notice.”

Malaysian news site The Star Online quoted Disney’s Malaysian arm as saying that release had been put off pending an “internal review.” Disney’s official Malaysian website still lists “Beauty and the Beast” as “coming soon.”

The yanking of the film came after Malaysia’s film censorship board excised a scene in which the sexuality of sidekick character LeFou, played by actor Josh Gad, is made clear.

Gay sex is still punishable by law, including imprisonment, in socially conservative Malaysia. Gay characters are allowed to be shown in movies, but only if they are portrayed negatively or as repentant.

If China decides to restrict it, Disney will edit the film for that market and the edits would likely allay the concerns of Russia and Malaysia.

None of this is needed or even appropriate for the story. Disney allowed the producers to co-opt a vehicle that appeals to young children to advance an agenda. Iger clearly is willing to advance his desire to be seen as a SJW by putting the interests of the owners of the company, the shareholders, behind his SJW quest. While the film will undoubtedly do well, it won't do as well as it would've without this nonsense.

Apparently Disney is not releasing the movie in Malaysia either - even after "those" scenes were edited out.

Are you bringing your grandchildren with you to see it, David?

Since they are well over 12 and live 3,500 miles away, that is not happening.

Russia and Malaysia are unlikely to have enough of a sales impact to force Disney's hand on this. China is a completely different matter. In any case, while the film will gross hundreds of millions, it will be less than had they not chosen to pollute the movie with such nonsense.

Generally injecting political controversy into anything is bad business.

All it does is alienate a segment of your potential customer base.

‘Beauty and the Beast’ Is a Hit in Russia Despite Gay LeFou

The news that Disney’s remake of “Beauty and the Beast” would turn Gaston’s sidekick LeFou into a gay character made waves in Russia, but not enough to stop them from heading to the theater to see it.

Despite calls for a ban because of its “gay propaganda” and being hit with a 16+ rating by the country’s film board, Bill Condon’s remake had a strong opening weekend in Russia, making an estimated $6 million as part of the film’s $180 million international box office start.

Funny....70 years ago Bugs Bunny put on a wig and lipstick and had a homosexual love scene with Elmer Fudd, and no one seemed to mind.

‘Beauty And The Beast’ Malaysia Release Set With No Cuts, Local Cinemas Say

It looks like Beauty And The Beast will have a happy ending in Malaysia after all. The country’s largest cinema chain, Golden Screen Cinemas, tweeted today that the film will be released on March 30 with no cuts and rated PG-13. The news comes after the local censor sought over four minutes of edits “involving a gay moment” which Disney refused. The Mouse postponed the release last week saying the film “has not been and will not be cut for Malaysia.”

The movie was then submitted to the Film Appeals Committee, a separate body to the censorship board, which has the power to reverse the board’s decision. It was known that the Committee was screening the film today. There has been no official confirmation from Disney Malaysia, although Golden Screen Cinemas also wrote on its Facebook page, “This is official from Disney. No cuts. PG13. 30 March. GET YOURSELF READY!” Deadline has reached out.
