With the new year, a number of iHeart stations, formerly Fox News Radio affiliates, have switched to iHeart's own hourly newscasts, called NBC News Radio. They include...
WTAM Cleveland
WKRC Cincinnati
WTVN Columbus
KNRS-AM-FM Salt Lake City
When Fox News Radio began delivering hourly five minute newscasts in June of 2005, nearly all Clear Channel talk stations switched from whatever network they were affiliated with to Fox. I would imagine that was dozens of stations, in markets big and small. That really cut into the affiliate lists for CBS and ABC. But Clear Channel (now iHeart) has a financial interest in Fox News Radio, as well as being its distribution service. There were only a few exceptions in markets where Clear Channel owns more than one talk station, such as Denver, where 630 KHOW is the Fox affiliate while 850 KOA stayed with ABC and 760 KKZN stayed with CBS. But that was rare.
Are there other iHeart stations that have switched to NBC? Is Fox upset? Isn't it odd that iHeart has a financial stake in Fox News Radio, while starting its own competing news service?
A couple of additional notes... For some reason, 840 WHAS Louisville has become an ABC affiliate, leaving Fox, but NOT for NBC. That's odd since iHeart has no financial stake in ABC Radio News. Meanwhile, co-owned 1080 WKJK in Louisville has been a CBS affiliate. I wonder if that's still the case?
Also, iHeart's New York City talk station, WOR, says every hour that it is an NBC News Radio station, although it never runs the network news. It has local newscasters around the clock, even overnight.
