Durango closer to getting Colorado TV

The latest step in a years-long campaign, officials from La Plata County, Colo., which includes Durango, will be lobbying the FCC to make a market modification that will bring Denver TV to the area.

Currently, the county gets broadcasts from Albuquerque, N.M., which means residents don't have access to local TV news from their home state.

But earlier this month, the satellite TV provider Dish said broadcasting Denver TV to the area is “not technically unfeasible."

Now it's up to officials to convince the FCC to let them have it. Local leaders are putting together a petition asking the FCC to modify the market based on the area's need for local programming. Once the FCC gets the petition it will have 120 days to grant or deny it.

not technically unfeasible? Isnt that a double negative? I think they mean "not technically feasible"

sure it is. The SD spotbeam does cover Durango...the HD is real close so its possible they (Dish) may not give them HD. But right now ALB spotbeam for HD doesnt reach Durango (SD does)

As an alternative, Colorado Springs TV should also be considered

It appears there's some omissions and mis-information on this.

Albuquerque and Salt Lake are in HD.

To receive the full compliment of channels,
you need a view of the south end of the
La Plata Mountains. The site is at:
37 21 58 108 08 54 10,200 feet

We do have other subsites to serve the
public that do not have as many channels.

We are a local government entity and funded
by a portion of a mill levy on all real property.
( .777 )
No fees or donations.

Formed as a special district in 1979
Future plans are to continue as we are, always
trying to offer more channels.

The FCC's incentive auction is under way and
we do not know the extent of impact of that
until the auction is completed. It could remove
some frequencies from our lineup. Hopefully
the auction will take a few years, and technology
will advance to be able to compact more channels
in our allowable bandwidth. Currently we utilize
ATSC 1.0 for broadcast and the future will utilize
ATSC 3.0. I believe it is a few years away though.

Montezuma County is a great place to live, and
our board of directors are fully committed to
long term translator broadcasting.

In the area, they receive a full complement of Salt Lake City AND Albuquerque
stations in High Definition. Most of Denver's major stations are available but only
in Standard Definition. They also have a station or two from Grand Junction, CO.
In all, the residents of Cortez and nearby areas have more viewing choices than
many of the biggest markets in the U.S.

This would change NOTHING as Durango ALREADY gets Albuquerque stations in HD. As for Grand Junction, there;s only two full powered stations anyway (KREX 5 & KKCO 11)

Self defeating.....

Since they saw that Gray got the approval to put their CBS & FOX from Wausau into parts of the Duluth, MN DMA (Ashland and Iron Counties) on satellite they figure they have a good chance of this happening too
