Disney to Add ABC, ESPN and Other Channels to Sony's PlayStation Vue

Investors will be looking for any signal about the growth prospects for ESPN later today when Disney reports September quarter earnings and talks to analysts. So it’s probably no coincidence that the company used this morning to disclose that Disney-owned ABC stations and cable channels including ESPN Media Networks will be distributed on Sony’s PlayStation Vue streaming service.

No word on when this will begin. Disney’s agreement provides for in and out of home on-demand viewing on multiple devices. Independently owned ABC affiliates can opt-in to provide their live programming to PlayStation users.

In addition to the ABC stations, specific channels to be added include ABC Family (to be rebranded as Freeform in January), Disney Channel, Disney Junior, Disney XD, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN College Extra, ESPNU, ESPNEWS, ESPN Deportes, ESPN Classic, ESPN Goal Line, ESPN Buzzer Beater, ESPN Bases Loaded, Fusion, Longhorn Network, and SEC-ESPN Network.

PlayStation Vue is available to those with a PS4 or PS3 console as well as iPads and iPhones.

Nothing new as far as when the Disney channels will begin airing on PS Vue, but now if you own an Amazon Fire TV box or stick, or an iPad/iPhone, you can use the TV service. They also have a promotion where if you sign-up for a PS Vue subscription (to either the Core or Elite package), you can receive a free Fire TV stick.

The watch apps for the Disney channels and ESPN are already on Roku, although I haven't seen ABC there yet.

The watch apps for ABC and ABC Family were added to Roku yesterday. Watch ABC Family include a live feed, but Watch ABC is on demand only and doesn't carry a live feed. But Watch ESPN includes live sports from ABC.

A lot of these networks are inconsistent when it comes to offering live feeds on certain platforms. As an example, USA Network offers a live feed on their website (which feed you get depends on your cable subscription), but not on their phone app (at least on Android phones); another example, BET (and probably the other Viacom networks as well) does the opposite--live feed on the phones and tablets, on-demand only on their website.

They finally added the Disney networks to the PS Vue within the last couple of days.

Access tier: ABC (WABC, KABC, WLS, WPVI, KGO in their home markets; only on-demand programming in Dallas and Miami), ESPN, ESPN 2, Disney Channel, Disney Jr., Disney XD, Freedom
Core: ESPN U, ESPNews, SEC Network
Elite: Fusion

ESPN's other networks (ESPN 3, Classic, Deportes, Longhorn Network, and the Goal Line/Buzzer Beater channel) will be added at a later date.
