This was brought to my attention and I thought you guys might get a kick out of it.

A guy who worked for K-Mart in the late 1980s and early 1990s has digitized full reels of their in-store background music and uploaded the files to the Internet Archive, meaning totally free access.

Here is the link to his audio files:

If you want to read about the guy, here is an article from Vice.com:

This kind of music doesn't appeal to me, but I think this is great. There are all kinds of great things I have found over at archive.org

There is some good music on these cassettes, including a bunch of instrumental covers of popular 1970s and 1980s songs, plus a bunch of rare AC songs. They were still using reel-to-reel tapes until the late 1980s when K-Mart went to cassettes, with various songs and K-Mart ads included. It wasn't until 1993 that the cassettes were retired and in-store background music came in via satellite.

Who played that really smooth cover of Richard Clapton's "Girls on the Avenue" on the May 1988 tape? It's between 25m 24s and 28m 49s.

EDIT: Also, the title of that funky late 70s/early 80s Herb Alpert (I think) cut at 1h 55m 39s-2h 45s.
