KEARTH 101 (it's only 80's if we say so)

so 5 minutes ago I called Charlie Tuna who is subbing, for Gary Bryan for Memorial Day. I called him up hoping to hear
"Physical" by Olivia Newton-John

First he said "it's past the 80's"

Then he said "it's not in here"

I guess it's only 80's if KEARTH says so. I Know Physical is a very popular early 80's song.

Sad state KRTH is in when they don't allow listeners to call in a popular 80's hit.

Probably "Physical" doesn't test high enough to be added to the playlist. And as David always says, "Just because a song was a huge monster #1 hit in 1980 doesn't mean the target demographic wants to hear it today."

Do they actually take listener requests like the old KKDJ "Instant Requests"?

Physical shows up in other markets. It's all in how the audience in a specific area feels about a song. Some cities love it, others hate it.

As said elsewhere in this thread -- and in some way, shape, or form, in practically every thread that gets started about KRTH (usually several times) -- "popular" is a term which has to be filtered for the present. Being #1 when the song was current is not an automatic indication of its popularity with today's listeners. That's why there is research that includes music testing ... to see what is popular with the audience KRTH has now.

If being #1 was the only criteria, here are six songs from 1980 that would have to be added to the library:
Lady/Kenny Rogers
Upside Down/Diana Ross
Funkytown/Lipps Inc.
Woman In Love/Barbra Streisand
Do That To Me One More Time/Captain & Tennille
Please Don't Go/KC & the Sunshine Band

I don't know about you, but I'll be happy to never hear those songs again, be it on KRTH, Pandora, my MP3 player, or the stream of an oldies station in Colorado Springs.

P.S.: "Physical", although having entered the chart in late November 1980, peaked at #1 in 1981, and is therefore considered to be associated with that's year's hits. Just sayin' ...

Ron Jacobs, KHJ's program director from 1965 to 1969, was asked one time, "How much do listener requests affect the playlist?" His answer: "Not a bit." The station frequently promoted its request line, "HOllywood 1-93-53. You say it, we play it," but the line existed just so listeners could think that their requests mattered. I'm sure KRTH is no different. If they are not playing Physical, it wouldn't matter if a thousand listeners called in to request it.

That's right. It is hard to think of an industry that disrespects its customers more than radio.

As we've said many times, the listeners are users, not customers. The advertisers are the customers.

I don't see how playing the requests of a handful of people is being respectful of listeners.

That's right. It is hard to think of an industry that disrespects its customers more than radio.

It's hard to think of any industry where the opinion of anyone whose only qualification is owning a telephone would be considered significant.

In any case, it only takes a short period of time being on the air to know that requests don't reflect average listeners.

First is the classic call to request the song that just played... or is playing right now! That is all too common.

Second is the rush of calls for the same song... generally, in the past, due to a fan club effort and today due to a FB post or Tweet.

Third are drunks or tokers who call a CHR to request a 40-year-old classic rock song. Or, in general, calls for out of format songs.

Fourth are those that call for the same time everyday, often for an obscure song nobody remembers or wants to hear.

That's why, since the 70's, we have picked nicely selected samples of all the perspective listeners and dug deeply into their likes and dislikes. If a song does not show up as positive in those situations, no amount of calling will get it played.

Funkytown is already on the KRTH playlist. Shotgun played it the other day.

It was on WDRC-FM's playlist here in Connecticut, too, before the sale and flip to classic rock. "Upside Down" also made the cut there. I think "Physical" might have gotten a few spins on the Saturday night request show, the other songs not even that. Proving yet again that "popular then" doesn't always mean "popular now."

I'm lobbying to get semoochie's "manure" comment included in the next edition of Bartlett's Book Of Familiar Quotations. What a great line! Here is what KRTH was playing regularly in April. This list excludes a few mid-1960s songs which were played only a few times.

so 5 minutes ago I called Charlie Tuna who is subbing, for Gary Bryan for Memorial Day. I called him up hoping to hear
"Physical" by Olivia Newton-John

First he said "it's past the 80's"

Then he said "it's not in here"

I guess it's only 80's if KEARTH says so. I Know Physical is a very popular early 80's song.

Sad state KRTH is in when they don't allow listeners to call in a popular 80's hit.

Of course now I'll now weigh in since another KRTH topic has begun in earnest.

I totally agree with you 34James. "Physical" was a huge song in late 1981, #1 for 10 agonizing weeks (I say agonizing, because it effectively block Foreigner's "Waiting For a Girl Like You" a much better song, from reaching the top for 10 weeks!)

It's a special holiday weekend for 80's music. They should play far more 80's than what THEY are told are the greatest 80's on earth by a select few. If someone requests "Physical" or "Woman in Love" or the overplayed "Boys of Summer" during an EIGHTIES weekend, then you suck it up, and play the damn song. What is the holdup? It's a specialty weekend, where few are listening to begin with, so why should it matter?? They are truly a mess if they cannot even satisfy a few listeners with a request. You are right 34james....they are in a sad state.

BTW, I invite you to listen to WOGL's monster 2000 song A to Z holiday weekend special, which I'm listening to, 101 times better then that junk production out west.

I don't know about you, but I'll be happy to never hear those songs again, be it on KRTH, Pandora, my MP3 player, or the stream of an oldies station in Colorado Springs.

Actually KWRP 690/100.3 has played "Lady", "Funkytown" and "Upside Down" as well as a request I called in a few days ago which was literally played in three minutes after I called it in. "Fire Lake" by Bob Seger. Talk about service! I'll take that any day of the week. KWRP is really a good, good station.

I'd be bored and annoyed out of my mind if all I could hear, was K-Earth 101 on a daily basis today. But right now, it's all about WOGL. You should listen too, KM

That's right. It is hard to think of an industry that disrespects its customers more than radio.

Maybe fast food places that continue to ignore my request for no cheese, but yet they still put it on, as few times I ever eat that stuff. But yes, you are right CF. It's their own agenda, not the "customers", not at all.

Nope, they are customers. They pay a monthly fee to use the internet, which gives that customer usage of websites.

None of the internet fee goes to web owners. So no, the monthly fee only covers the connection, not the sites, and that's stated in the terms of use.

Quite a few music sites have a paywall that requires a subscription above and beyond the internet fee.

Stations like KRTH do a great job satisfying their users, as evidenced by their number of users, which exceeds the stations you prefer.
