Now that Pandora is cleared to be the licensee of KXMZ in Rapid City, let the speculation begin! One thought is Pandora will purchase more stations in an effort to drive down royalty rates, another is that Pandora wants to test the waters of streaming to OTA radio, rather than the more traditional model the other way around.

Any Bets On What Pandora Will Do With A Radio Station?

AFAIK The royalty rate remains the same regardless of the number of stations owned. As Tom Taylor suggested in his newsletter today, this is why Disney will retain KDIS.
Owning one radio station qualifies you for the lower rate. I haven't seen any response yet from SoundExchange, although when the sale was originally announced, they were not very happy.

Their only purpose is to get a discount on the digital royalty.
Most likely it will be an automated format that's requires minimal managerial attention.
If anything, this move will agitate for a change in terms for the discount that requires a majority of revenue to be obtained from OTA to receive the discount, or something more than a token station. While most radio conglomerates might support that, iHeart might push back if their revenue is starting to skew towards their online platform.

It looks like to me that they could make it the ultimate Jack station. Classical one minute, hip hop the next, and anywhere in between.
