FM Stereo

On this day in 1961, the Federal Communications Commission authorized regular FM stereo broadcasting starting on June 1, 1961

Yep, the FCC chose Zenith/GE method of FM stereo over the competing Crosby-Teletronics system. The Crosby system was actually the better of the two finalists, mainly because it was inherently less susceptible to interference and had better frequency response than the Zenith/GE system. The Zenith/GE system won because it was compatible with the existing SCA services, already being allowed for FM broadcasting.

Hmmm, I was not aware. So the S/N ratio on stereo FM could have been actually lower with the Crosby-Teletronics system? If so, what a shame.
