Wpen to launch new local morning show

Is this WPEN's first new local morning show since Ken Garland? Haven't they been running Mike & Mike since they switched to sports? I wonder why GM sold the AM station. Wouldn't have it made sense for GM to go local on the FM and go ESPN national on the AM with overflow local sports on 950 also? I always thought GM had Mike & Mike on to sort of protect P&S and DeBella.

Asleep at the wheel Jul?

I agree with out 100%. I think that Greater Media should try and get back 950 AM to put ESPN radio on it. They were foolish to sell the station back in 2012, knowing that someday, 97.5 may go all local, without ESPN radio.

They weren't foolish--they sold off an asset of limited value.

In the time since Ken Garland, there were further iterations of the morning show on the standards 950, plus the oldies version, and WPEN as sports talk on 950 had a short run with a local morning show...not all that memorable.

I'm not sure where this idea of protection would come from--the primary target is going to be WIP. They're going to be the ones to (potentially) lose listeners of any significance. And there's a benefit--you can now sell a broader portfolio of male-centric morning local programming.

I would look for Mike and Mike to show up somewhere else, perhaps 610. ESPN usually requires Mike and Mike to be aired on all of their affiliates either on their station or another one in the market. This just happened in DC.

Would 97.5 be allowed by ESPN to air Mike and Mike as a delayed program, say after the morning show goes off, or at the 12 noon time slot, and still retain their ESPN affiliation?

Pretty much a "tree in the forrest and no one's around" scenario, isn't it? ;) But what the heck, a clearance is a clearance.

It will be interesting to see how the main battle shapes up over time.

Sounds like 610 has the Herd on now. Have they completely switched from CBS Sports Radio to ESPN? Good move for them if they have.

What is wrong with 610's signal? It's still a pretty good one here in Philly. It did very well as WIP for years before WIP's switch to FM.

That's true enough. I was thinking more that 610 has virtually no audience anymore, making it a "tree falling in a forrest," but hey, it all works.

Just an opinion: Don't be shocked if down the road, that 1210 WPHT-AM picks up CBS Sports Radio. Since CBS Sports radio is a CBS property, more likely 1210 would be the logical choice to put the radio network on since its a CBS O and O.

It will go on a CBS O and O, a CBS owned FM HD subchannel. Let's see WIP HD4 is available but that's probably going to be Eagles 24/7 so a subchannel of AMP 96.5? WOGL already has 3 subchannels.

Or a subchannel of WXTU. I forgot that WXTU is also CBS owned now.
