Hot 97 Reaches A Crossroads: NY Times Article

NY Times article discusses the major changes that have taken place at Hot 97 since the spring/summer of 2013:

the defections of Angie Martinez and Cipha Sounds to Power 105~1;
the defection of DJ Mister Cee to Radio 103.9;
the dismissal of Big Dennis Rivera;
the resignation of MD Karlie Hustle;
the move by Ebro Darden from PD to morning drive;
the additions of Pio Ferro as PD and Nessa as afternoon host
and the station's musical direction.

What could lie ahead for the legendary hip-hop outlet?

If you listen to Hot 97 and then 105.1...you will notice that 105.1 supports NY artists more then 97.1 and 97.1 sounds poppish while 105.1 sounds urban and Power 105.1's DJs are from NYC while Hot 97's dj's are for Cali

Interesting that the NY Times writes a fairly positive piece about radio. And that Clear Channel is THE place where top talent want to work.

Money and opportunities talk.
Hot 97 was known to be very arrogant then Power 105. It bit them in the butt because the why people listen to Hot 97 was because of the people that left the station.
Plus Hot 97 + Emmis is ONLY focused on payola which is why Hot 97 is Cold 97.
Plus the only DJ at Hot 97 thats from NY is Funk Flex. (Besides weekends)

You guys want to complain because you don't realize how good you still have it, but you also don't realize that under different circumstances, your Hot format COULD have been like KMVA Hot 97.5 here in Phoenix... (http://trendingradio.com/)

Imagine the Hot name being used elsewhere on your dial for a different format and WQHT being something else and you not having the option to flip back and forth with the current Hot 97 format and another station in NY. If you want to hear some REAL poppish stations then come to Boston, Phoenix, or LA, etc. and I'm not even talking about the CHR Top 40 stations either...

Besides, Hot 97.1 is Rhythmic, not Urban. At least they lean heavily on the urban side, even more so than Power 106 in LA.

Hot 97 had a nice ride, kiss was moved out of the way as their new sister station, and until 2003? no competition bls never really went for it or challenged.

Power comes on and got ratings very close to hot 97 and cutting them down to size. Hot still won most the 18-34 battles with power and also z100.
then the ppm came on and power and hot got their ratings reduced, sometimes one of them won 18-34 but not like before.

Now power has Angie in Afternoons to compliment the better morning show(even if its national it doesn't really mater) and the station is on fire. You can feel the momentum on 1051, the deejays sound like they are having fun and it is a fun focused listen, you hear the songs you should and want to hear right now.

Hot 97 seems like it is in a funk, when funk is not on the air, but Clue does his thing and closed the gap considerably.

You can't do more rhythmic, 923 and 1035 even 1003 are established *now.
Hot should just hammer the hip hop hits, kill what little rnb might be left on there now, still avoid the iggy stuff, and compliment it with "The birthplace of hip hop is hot 97" and play a nice amount of the classic hip hop. That 90s stuff is loved especially in ny.

Tell me your thoughts on this idea, and maybe you hold out and see if these trends continue, but this could be a good idea to shake things up.

Hot 97 doing throwback hiphop mixes on the half hour, every hour. Obv encourage requests check ins. They would need a mixer in there 24/7 but that wouldn't be a problem.

The only thing better than classic hip hop is classic hip hop being mixed so that you don't play all of the songs enough for the oh wow and a good taste but then you move on to the next song. Every song is different but you do got to play enough of it, can't hit a strong song and bail on it after 20 seconds.

not much of a choice when they own probably 80% of the market...and your other choices are companies like cumulus.

As for DJs, I thought radio listeners didn't care if their talent was local? From Cali or Ohio, so long as the show itself was good?

Looking at the average for the three last books of 2014, iHeart has a 22.3% share of listening. That's not 80%.

Other significant operators include CBS, MultiCultural, SBS, Univision, ABC/Disney (ESPN), Emmis, Cumulus, Salem and Bloomberg

Yeah, that is what I thought too. Go back and look at WABC in the 70's and 80's and you will find a lot of the biggest names came from well outside New York and the boroughs.

Hot 97 will NEVER beat Power 105.
Hot 97 should just flip to Old School Hip-Hop and I think that will benefit them. They can't go too Rhythmic because of 92.3 and 103.5 and 100.3 like DOB said. It don't make sense. Old School Hip-Hop is cheaper to run and plus the ratings will rise.
It doesnt matter if the mixers are from Cali but it does matter if the On-Air personality like nessa is on a NYC urban station because ny listeners like to hear a local voice. Nessa sounds just like any other radio dj at a top-40 station. Plus mixers on NYC radio talk and put drops while mixing. Just like they do in clubs.

BLS did challenge trick97 in 94, but got pulled through the ringer for trying do so by it's listener's, trick 97 had no competition until march of 02 when jammin oldies flipped to punk 105.9.
