Lee "Baby" Simms has passed.

LKellerIII

Walk of Fame Participant
It's been posted on the LA board, but is not getting much response - probably because Simms had not worked in Los Angeles since the 1980s...possibly earlier. He had worked at KRLA and KMET, following success in the late 60s in San Diego at Top 40 KCBQ...where, if memory serves, he battled Bobby Ocean at KGB. For a while at KRLA, he worked under the alias "Matthew Doc Frail," who was supposedly a veterinarian.

From probably the early 80s on, he worked in the Bay Area at KFOG, a couple of other stations (KYA-FM?), then did afternoon drive on 98.1 Kiss-FM from the beginning of the station in 1997 until a few years ago, when KISQ decided (with poor results) to pick up the syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show, forcing Renel out of the morning into afternoons, and Lee out the door. But Simms was grateful for his time at KISQ - he stated it was the longest lasting and most stable job of his radio career, and set him up for a pleasant retirement.

Apparently, he was suffering from cancer. The initial story (not confirmed) was that he took his own life. Simms was at his best as a talkative and mouthy Top 40 jock with a wicked sense of humor. You can find a lot of his work at reelradio.com. He was considerably toned-down by the time he hit Kiss-FM.

Did he do a stint in Phoenix? I seem to remember the name but not the time or station. KOOL-FM?
