Jerry Gross, longtime San Diego sports announcer, died of prostate cancer January 21 at age 81. In the 1960s he did play-by-play for the St. Louis Hawks and the St. Louis Cardinals. He came to San Diego in 1967 as the announcer for the Rockets, a new NBA expansion team. Two years later, he became the announcer for the Padres, a new MLB team. He also called games for the Chargers, San Diego State University and several high schools. Gross also was a sports anchor at KFMB-Channel 8 and called Indiana Pacers games on ESPN.
