Of the four English-language sports stations, KSPN is in 29th place with a 1.1, KLAC is 36th with a 0.6, KFWB is 39th with a 0.2 and KLAA is 42nd with a 0.1. ESPN Deportes affiliate KWKW did not even show up. Five sports stations with a combined 2% share of the audience. Debate topic: "How many sports stations is too many?"

When one of them is not profitable, then that is one too many.

As BigA mentioned, sports stations play on a different field. There is money out there that is tagged "sports marketing" that does not go through the normal spot buy channels. The most obvious area is in play by play sponsorships, but there are many other kinds of buys that go only to "sports environment" media. If you are a KIIS or a KOST or a KROQ, you don't get on those buys. And there is a log of sports money out there.

That's true. The Lakers are now 12-30 and are 22½ games behind the Warriors in the Pacific division but fans continue to go to the games and they spend thousands of dollars on Lakers jerseys and other merchandise. The Nielsen Audio ratings rank stations in order of listenership. David, do you have access to any rankings that show each station's annual advertising revenue? Are there low-rated stations that make a lot more money than some of the stations with a bigger audience?

Strange pattern - KOST (FM) surged while sister station KFI (AM) dropped and all other Los Angeles stations made minor changes? It is understandable that KOST's holiday carols attracted mere listeners, but this does not explain the fall-off at KFI. Meanwhile KABC is running behind KEIB and is tied with KRLA. This report methinks needs to be considered atypical and we should wait for the next one.

I think it's been mentioned many times in many threads on many forums that sports stations consistently outbill their ratings because the listeners they attract often listen to nothing but sports talk and play-by-play and are largely male 25-54, a demo that is hard to reach with political talk or most music.

Typically the Holiday book, which is roughly the week after Thanksgiving to the week of Christmas, is a poor talk month due to the disrupted work and leisure time schedules.

KOST took about 6 shares away from all kinds of different stations. Some of it came from KFI, just as some came from KLVE.

Debate topic: "How many sports stations is too many?"

Better debate topic: Why is that question asked every time the ratings are released, when those of us who either work in the business or at least have been hanging around here long enough (looks @ Steve) already knows of the different metric used to measure success for Sports-formatted stations?

Mantra for Steve to chant the next time he feels like posting that question: In Sports, the ratings don't matter. Just chant that over and over until the urge to post goes away ...

Someone should have shown that list to Alex Meruelo a year ago, before he purchased that albatross.

Interesting that KSWD is the bottom full market commercial FM signal on the list. We have seen their ratings really go up this year; it will be interesting to see how that impacts their positioning on this list.

Not to be pedantic or anything but KKLA is on there twice. :)

Sales is based on demos, and The Sound is a bit old.

And they have been "knee deep in the hoopla" in their on-air promos about playing significantly fewer minutes per day of commercials than KLOS, which in a market this size is usually a sign of being skipped over on agency buys.

The "KKLA" just after KWVE is actually KLAA, Art Moreno's station with a, um, sports format.

All righty, Mr. Richards, I will cease making comments about the low ratings of sports stations. The list that David posted---thank you, David!---shows that KSPN ranked 11th in billing in 2013, a year in which their ratings ranged from 1.1 to 1.4. Sports stations can be successful without a large audience share. I get that. Several months ago, there was a rumor that KABC would switch to a sports format and even make a bid to regain broadcast rights to Dodgers baseball. Was the rumor unfounded? Or was KABC seriously considering such a format? And.....would it have been a wise decision? I'm assuming KABC occasionally does make a wise decision, although the new line-up doesn't exactly bolster that theory.

I seem to recall that the deal the Dodgers made with KLAC made them part owners of the station. So I doubt they'll get a better deal anywhere else.

I would have thought KABC would have wanted to carry the CBS Sports Network, which Cumulus distributes. But apparently the company prefers to do local talk.
