Should Sony Pictures Pull ‘The Interview’?

Sony Pictures Entertainment executives have to be at least considering pulling “The Interview” as damage to its bottom line and reputation from the massive cyber attack mounts, security and business analysts told TheWrap.

Messages purporting to be from the hackers claiming responsibility for the assault have demanded that the studio halt plans for the nationwide Christmas Day release of the Seth Rogen-James Franco film comedy about a plot to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. And a Sony attorney’s letter to news agencies is the clearest indicator yet that the studio believes stopping the film’s release is the hackers’ motive.

Carmike Cinemas First To Cancel ‘The Interview’ Over Hacker Threat Concerns

UPDATE: Sony’s The Interview will not play in Carmike Cinemas following today’s missive from hackers who invoked 9/11 in their threats to moviegoers. Carmike, the first chain to pull the controversial comedy, operates 278 theaters and 2,917 screens in 41 states and is one of the largest exhibitors in the U.S. A source tells Deadline the Georgia-based company made the call after Sony told theater owners they’re going to release the film as planned, but will support exhibitors who choose to bow out. Sony’s now awaiting word from other chains on the fate of the Seth Rogen and James Franco comedy, which is scheduled for a December 25 wide release.

‘The Interview’ Yanked By Regal, AMC And Other Major Chains

The movie looks dead: All of the major exhibition chains including Regal, AMC, Cinemark and Cineplex are expected to announce today that they have decided not to show Sony’s The Interview following a hacker threat yesterday against venues that show the controversial comedy. Yesterday Sony gave theater owners the option to back away from the film. Earlier today their trade group, the National Association of Theatre Owners, said that ”individual cinema operators may decide to delay exhibition of the movie so that our guests may enjoy a safe holiday movie season experiencing the many other exciting films we have to offer.”

Cinemark is still dealing with legal actions from the fatal 2012 shootings in one of its theaters in Aurora, Colorado.

And just like that, it's gone. Maybe it should go straight to video.

Sony Cancels Plans To Release 'The Interview' On Christmas Day

Sony Pictures has canceled plans to release "The Interview" on Christmas Day, the studio announced Wednesday in a statement:

In light of the decision by the majority of our exhibitors not to show the film The Interview, we have decided not to move forward with the planned December 25 theatrical release. We respect and understand our partners’ decision and, of course, completely share their paramount interest in the safety of employees and theater-goers.

U.S. Officials Determine North Korea Is Behind Sony Hack: Reports

U.S. officials have determined that hackers working for North Korea are behind the Sony Pictures Entertainment attack, multiple news outlets reported Wednesday.

According to NBC, the hack originated outside of North Korea, but appears to have been carried out by individuals working for the North Korean government.

And just like that, it's gone. Maybe it should go straight to video.

Where it will, no doubt, run into similar resistance in the distribution channel. No Wal-Mart, perhaps? No Netflix? Will any corporate entity risk cyberterrorism, physical terrorism and the spectre of crippling litigation just to make Sony's comedy feature available to the public?

Maybe it should go straight to video.

Or maybe not:

Sony Has “No Further” Plans To Release ‘The Interview’ On VOD Or Elsewhere

The Interview is over – truly and really. Despite reports floating around other outlets, Sony will not be putting the now shuttered pic out on VOD, DVD or any other platform – at least not any time soon. “Sony Pictures has no further release plans for the film,” a studio spokesperson told me today.

I think what Sony should do is just sent the film out to every torrent site on the planet. Should NK (or whomever is deemed responsible for the original hack) retaliate, the torrent people will tear them apart.

If Sony had some ***** and released the movie, I'd make a point of buying several tickets for it. I doubt that I'd actually watch is, since it is a Seth Rogen/James Franco "comedy". But I'd buy a few tickets just to tell the North Koreans that they can ***** ** ** ***** *****.

A real no win situation for Sony. By not releasing the film, it appears they are caving, but if they did release it, it would likely be portrayed as irresponsible.

And so it goes. I predict the film will eventually get a release in some form or fashion. This situation certainly has raised the profile of what was likely to be a mediocre comedy.

There's another factor here not mentioned...

The North Koreans are still Koreans.

And Sony is a Japanese company, not an American company.

Japan has a long history of brutal invasion, occupation and war crimes in Korea. It annexed and ruled Korea from 1910 until the end of World War II.

Whatever one thinks of the Kim family and the North Korean government, Koreans have every reason to hate the Japanese.

Good Lord! Not everyone holds ancestral grudges from generations before they were born.

Jimmy Kimmel Starts Campaign To Get Fox News Channel To Air ‘The Interview’ In Its Entirety – Video

Fox News Channel rising star Megyn Kelly was ABC late-night host Jimmy Kimmel’s guest last night when the big news was about the Justice Department’s upcoming announcement the Sony hack, and movie-theater threat, were the work of the North Korean government in retaliation for the studio’s movie The Interview. Kelly and Kimmel agreed Sony needed to get the movie — a comedy about a bumbling talk show host and his producer recruited by the CIA to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong Un — to viewers so the studio, and Americans, could take a stand against North Korea. Kimmel speculated Sony would simply let pirates put it out, so as not to put theater-goers, or content distributors at risk.

As long as we're talking movie biz here, Avid's posts remind me of M-G-M's long-ago slogan..."More STARS than there are in Heaven!"

Obama Announces New Sanctions On North Korea In Response To Sony Hack

U.S. President Barack Obama authorized additional sanctions against North Korea as the first U.S. response to the cyber hack on Sony Pictures Entertainment, the White House said on Friday.

The additional sanctions target three companies as well as 10 North Korean government officials, including individuals working in Iran, Syria, China, Russia and Namibia, according to the Treasury Department.
