CBS Warns It May Go Dark On Dish

CBS started alerting viewers Friday night that Dish Network could pluck out the Eye in certain markets, in the latest dispute to hit the pay-TV biz. “Attention, Dish customers! You could soon lose CBS,” the broadcaster’s spots said. Over all, there are 14 CBS-owned stations covered under Dish agreement, plus seven CW, two My Network TV and three independent stations. CBS’s contract with Dish is set to expire Nov. 20. In addition, Showtime and CBS Sports Network could be affected on Dish if the companies fail to reach an agreement.

And CNN/HLN is still off Dish Network, 25 days into the conflict. Wow, just wow. Greedy idiots at Turner, and now CBS, wanting money agreements. My relatives still won't forget the time KIMA, our local Yakima CBS station, was off Dish for six months due to that Fisher Communications conflict about 5 years ago...they had to get a little DTV antenna at the store to watch CBS soaps and local news!

KIMA is now owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group who bullied on the Block Communications Buckeye CableSystem in Toledo, Ohio by refusing and failing to allow Buckeye Cable the proper chance to negotiate to carry WNWO without needing to carry the planned news channel without Sinclair permission for the privilege and right to carry WNWO till Buckeye Cable was willing to have its subscribers be willing to pay up to $2-3.00 per subscribers per month for WNWO and used it to help launch the new cable news channel along with costs associated with Sinclair’s planned acquisition of Allbritton all under the order of David Smith with Barry Faber and David Amy having no choice but to follow the very strict marching orders from their boss David Smith for negotiating for carriage of WNWO on the Buckeye CableSystem over in Toledo, Ohio.

David Smith, Barry Faber, David Amy, Sinclair lobbyist Rebecca Hanson, and Sinclair Broadcast Group itself was way too busy on trying to focus on lobbying and bribing to the FCC in getting their acquisition of TV stations from the Allbritton deal done with allowing Armstrong Williams taking control of WABM in Birmingham, Alabama, WMMP in Charleston, South Carolina, and possibly WLYH in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania for Armstrong Williams to operate under the Howard Stirk Holdings company being operated under David Smith where Allbritton stations WBMA/WCFT/WJSU, WCIV, and WHTM also operate and overlap where both Sinclair and Allbritton both have TV stations over there in the same TV DMA market then trying to give Buckeye Cable System the proper chance at allowing them to have carriage of WNWO again at the time of Buckeye retransmission consent dispute with Sinclair over carriage of WNWO.

With Sinclair ownership of KIMA, KATU, KOMO from the Fisher acquisition, I would expect Sinclair with David Smith and his colleagues Barry Faber, and David Amy to bully cable and satellite (Directv and Dish) operators in future retransmission consent negotiations with Barry Faber, and David Amy having no choice but to follow the very strict marching orders from David Smith on bullying the MSO when retransmission consent negotiations stalls with the MSO being barred from the carrying the TV stations signals and carrying an out of market stations airing the same network as the in market station Sinclair controls in a retransmission consent dispute between an MSO and Sinclair MSOs to carry their stations without Sinclair's permission till the MSOs is willing to agreed to pay $2.40-3 (($.50 NBC, ABC, or FOX), ($.90 CBS), ($.25 CW, or MYNET), $1.00 local and syndication, $.90-1.50 to help launch the cable news channel Sinclair is launching) dollars for the privilege and right to carry Sinclair's stations and agreed to carry the new cable news channel that Sinclair is using to take WJLA's News Channel 8 into a national news channel for Sinclair that isn't yet on the air that Sinclair wants all the cable and satellite to carry the cable channel on cable and satellite basic tier.

I would also predict that Sinclair could also be one of the broadcasters that could also try to pursue on acquiring NTV (KHGI-KWNB) and KFXL Fox Nebraska based out of Axtell, Nebraska in the Kearney area from Harry Pappas and his Pappas Telecasting under the Pappas Liquidating Trust with receivership trustee David Stapleton in charge of the trust mainly by using the money on hand from the 2014 elections by airing political campaign ads for the political candidates on the Tv stations Sinclair operates and control and money from various banks. An Sinclair acquisition of NTV/KFXL would have Sinclair having a monopoly of FOX network service in the majority of Kansas with KSAS, Nebraska with NTV/KFXL, KPTM, and KPTH, and Iowa with KPTH, KPTM, KDSM, and KFXA completely in those states.

I feel for the Dish customers who are locked into a contract who may lose programming they like, but can't flip.

Glad I have an antenna to pick up OTA in case my cable company ever loses a negotiation like this. Well, that is if OTA remains in place after the auction.

I imagine CBS is looking at this as a perfect opportunity to promote the recently-launched CBS All Access, which offers a live stream of the local CBS station in the 14 markets where CBS could be taken off of Dish.

I suppose. But for those without an iPhone 6 or Galaxy S-whatever, you'll need that DTV antenna back on the roof! Hopefully DTV is around for a long time because some people need it.

What if an antenna doesn't work for you? Or if it needs to go on your roof or something? What if you live where cable is not an option?

This just shouldn't be allowed.

This just shouldn't be allowed.

So who is the controlling authority that should step in and enforce such standards on what is and isn't allowed? Are you saying that you have some sort of natural right to see CBS shows?

Dish is not the only option; there's also DirectTV.
And Dish is satellite, not cable. So there's also a cable company and many place Fiber Optics, too.
CBS (and other) shows are available on-demand, on-line.
And there was a time before cable and satellite TV when most everybody had an antenna on the roof. If people can put up a satellite dish, they can put up an antenna.
There is no natural right to get CBS but there are lots of options.

That said, the current law (Must Carry) is really stupid. Cable and satellite should be required to provide all local channels and not be required to pay for them. Cable and satellite companies and broadcasters have plenty of other ways to rake in cash. And broadcasters should not be allowed to yank the cable channels they own because of some dispute of their terrestrial channel.

By all means! We need to have Big Brother step in and control things for our own good. We must make all businesses toe the line and do what Big Brother tells them to do, how Big Brother tells them to do it, when Big Brother tells them to do it. Anyone who disagrees should be taken away for re-education and have all bad thoughts taken out of their heads and replaced with nothing but loyalty and affection for Big Brother, who, after all, only wants what's best for us. And since he knows what's best for us better than we do, we must go along with everything he tells us.
