15~Eighty is for sale: who wants it?

Well, Radio Disney has decided it's time to give up the ghost, with 23 of its 24 stations (including KMIK 15~Eighty) going on the market. It's a 50 kW class B (good technically), with the only problem being it's on Ancient Modulation in a market where AM radio is sports, brokered programming, Spanish and news talk. KMIK is the highest frequency AM station in Phoenix

Who will want this AM station?

Maybe the Lamptimer will buy it. No more little 60-watt pow-pow-power signal on 14~Forty, how about 50~Thousand Watts of POW. POW! POWER OLDIES!! Hire some personalities as well.

What would be a fair market price for 1580?

KIDR went for $1.8 million in 2012.

1580 was sold to Disney for $6 million 15 years ago.

Based on that, I would say $2.5 million to $3 million, possibly less.

Of course, KXEG and KXXT both went recently for less than $600 k each. But neither of those has a useful night signal, and KXEG is pretty challenged daytime, too.

Lot less, Old Gringo. Disney has been selling a lot of their stations for between 20 and 25 cents on the dollar when compared to the acquisition price. We'll wager an hour's ride in the Gremlin's back seat that the Mouse sells 15~Eighty for closer to 1 million than 2.5-3 million. The saving grace is 50w day/night bragging rights and some nice real estate along the Red Mtn freeway. Nuthin' else.

I personally think its next incarnation will be Spanish.

"Radio Quince-Ochenta, cincuenta MIL watts de potencia" does kinda have a ring to it... ;)

Jonathan Brandmeier maybe?

Thinking out loud here....... The older generation seems like it would be more inclined
to listen to AM. After all, it is what they started with. A format catering to those listeners
might just work. Perhaps KAHM could simulcast it's signal????

de acuerdo, mi amigo...o radiodifusión religión.

Salem has enough Ancient Modulation stations in the Valley, so we count them out.

Radio Hogar (KASA) might want to upgrade puny 15~Forty for 15~Eighty, but they recently overpaid for 5~Eighty in Marana.

KFNN..aka the illegal power alien...could legally run with more power at night by trading in their 15~Ten for 15~Eighty. But they really don't need the 50w night power after 6pm..only during the winter when they're supposed to power down to 100 watts prior to 6pm. Ahem, ahem, ahem!

Mother Hubbard? She's got three FM's and only two Ancient Modulation stations. Nah.

Immaculate Heart? 13~Ten is puny at night and eventually will have to leave the Mesa Cemetery. Dunno....they could duplex 13~Ten from the 15~Eighty site and have one station in English, el otro en Espanol.

Crawford. They know how to do religion well, but they'd be a little late to the game. However the bragging rights that go with 50Kw day and night might work for them.

Los Buckeye Boyz - we're just as Looney Tunes as the rest of the bidders, plus we know how to run rodeos from a parking lot.

...any other likely suspects?

Only one problem today... the Hispanic community has an average age that is about 10 years younger than the general market. And we know how little anyone in 18-34 or 18-49 listens to AM. In fact, in Mexico the congress there declared AM untenable and not viable and to save investments and jobs, ordered the CFT to create a path for as many AM stations to move to FM as possible; about 85% of all AMs are doing that.

Anyone under 45 who grew up in Mexico probably never listened to AM.

Of course, the purveyors of Spanish language religion either don't know this or don't care, as the sale of Houston's Radio Disney demonstrates.

You are right... after looking at the sales in Flint and Houston and Orlando, with the land about $1.8 seems more appropriate.

The only one benefiting from the 50 kilowatts is APS.

Even $1.8m is stout given the fact there are no ratings and revenue. While it's 50w, D & N, the Mouse has a MDCL waiver which saves some money on the APS bill.

The Nurse and I like the IHR scenario...they've done well with 13~Ten, but will need to move the towers as Mesa Cemetery needs the real estate for future horizontal drilling. They paid $1m for the formerly dark station, but that was when nothing else was available. By purchasing 15~Eighty they get a 50w flame thrower (ok,that's a stretch), a new location for 13~Ten's sticks, and two Ancient Modulation stations: one in English, the other in Español.

Makes sense to us...but if we were a Pat's football, we'd be more than seriously underinflated.

The hammer should be falling on 15~Eighty pretty soon, as more and more Mouse stations are being sold. The question Nurse Jeff and I pose is: will the buyer purchase it for radio or real estate? Nice patch of turf with plenty of drive by traffic on the 202. Topple the towers and build some pricey apartments or condos for those working near and along Rio Salado in Tempe. Sell the license for a nominal fee and let the next guy figure out how to put it back on the air with those six sticks. hmmmm. .. perhaps the SRPM Community is interested in a long term lease on their land along the river bottom.
