It appears this new station is going to be modeled after Entercom's highly successful Hot 103-7 in Seattle.
That station's immediate success greatly surprised me. Why? Like San Francisco, there were already two CHRs. And like San Francisco, Rhythmic (Hot) AC had been tried before with rather lackluster results -- in each instance under the "Movin" brand, to boot!
Will be interesting to see if Entercom can get lightning to strike twice. It's tough to argue with the format choice.
Will Q102 be as successful as Entercom's past format choices like the WOLF(failure), the GAME (failure in progress) or KFOX simulcast on the former KDFC frequency (double failure when KDFC outperforms classic rock. Not to mention Entercom changes took KOIT from perennial #1 25-54 to struggling, sometimes unsuccessfully to stay in the top 10
What could go wrong with Rhythmic AC? Well with co-owned Urban AC as competition along with KISQMKKSF, KMEL & KYLD fighting for a shrinking African Americam population, it looks like the Entercom geniuses are ready to fail again
Lots of Asians and Hispanics likes to listen to Urban music.

This is exactly what The Bay Area needs...another Rhythmic leaning radio station. We already have KYLD, KMVQ, KDON, Hot 105.7, KMEL and now Q102. I think it's time for one of these radio stations to try something else. How about Active Rock, Oldies or perhaps Adult Standards?
Active Rock…forget it. LIVE 105 isn’t doing well in the ratings and the bay area is way too ethnic in demographics.
Adult Standard or Oldies….forget it. How do you sell these format if it isn’t advertiser friendly in the demographics. Too old for the sales department.
As do some white males.
Well said.
I'm a white male in my late 30's and I listen. I don't see how all these stations can compete for a shrinking market.
While not direct competitors, I find myself bouncing from:
Now 99.7, KMEL, KYLD, Hot 105.7/100.7 and now Q102
IMHO, they can't all co-exist AND compete against online radio and iPods.
