KZZP History question

I stumbled onto KZZP wiki after clicking to see where Matt Mitchell went (previously at KRBE Houston). Did some reading to find Guy Zapoleon was PD there from 85-91. KZZP went A/C in 1991. Find this curious because in mid 1990, Zapoleon was here in Houston developing KNRJ's (now KHMX) coming A/C "Mix" format that launched in late-July '90. I also see that KZZP stunted and launched "Variety" the same way KHMX did including the first song being Steve Winwood's "Roll With It". Was Guy Zapoleon behind KZZP's flip to Variety?
